TD Riverhawk Sports Notes by Billy Brost - Sept. 21

The Dalles High School Riverhawks

The Dalles High School Riverhawks

From TDHS Atheltic Director Billy Brost:

I hope everyone stayed dry during our brief rainstorm over the weekend. Fall is in the air, temperatures are cooling down, and athletics is in full swing at The Dalles High School for the 2021-22 school year. All but one of our teams have had a competition, that being our Freshman/Freshman volleyball team, and they open play this week!

Conference play has opened for our varsity teams, and this coming week, we have teams on the road, as well as home, including our Cross Country program hosting the Bridgette Nelson this coming Friday at Sorosis Park. Let’s take a look at the week that was, what’s coming up, and some odds and ends!

The Week That Was:

-This past Monday, Sept. 13, our JV2 football team traveled to Gladstone and dropped their season opener by the score of 26-0. The highlight was the Riverhawks’ defense only allowing two first downs!

-Thursday, Sept. 16, was a busy day for Riverhawks’ athletics, as we had Boys’ and Girls’ soccer in action, as well as our volleyball programs. Varsity boys’ soccer traveled to Hillsboro, where they finished in a 1-1 tie. The varsity girls’ program played host to Hillsboro and dropped their match 4-0. Riverhawks’ volleyball battled a tough Crook County team on the road, winning the first set 26-24, before falling 3 games to 1, by the scores of 25-13, 25-17, and 25-11.

-On Friday, Sept. 17, the Riverhawks’ football team hosted their league opener against Redmond. A tough first quarter ended with our hometown team suffering a 76-12 loss at Sid White Field.

-On Saturday, Sept. 18, Juan Diego Contreras paced the Boys’ Cross Country runners at Oregon City, posting a time of 15:52.63, good enough for a second-place finish. Leo Lemann finished 11th, running a 16:51.61. The boys’ team placed 6th as a team with a score of 179. Caitie Wring finished 45th for the girls, running a 21:30.99, and Alaina Casady wasn’t far behind, finishing 48th with a 21:49.49. The girls’ team placed 12th with a 283 score.

-On Saturday and Sunday, our defending state champion cheer squad hosted choreographer Tara Mahoney, who has been instrumental in helping Coach Wallace and Coach Rodda build a cheer dynasty in The Dalles. The team worked on developing their competitive cheer routine in what hopefully brings home another title in 2022!

-Also on Saturday, the girls’ varsity soccer team hosted a friendly against Goldendale. Scoring was the order of the day, as the Lady Hawks came away with a 7-0 victory.

-A special shoutout to our JV2 volleyball team and Coach Chloe Beeson, who got their first win of the season! The girls defeated Cleveland High School by scores of 25-20, 21-25, and 15-6. Overall, the girls played a very competitive and solid tournament over the weekend. Great job ladies!

Odds and Ends:

-Former TDHS Athletic Director, Daunte Gouge paid a visit to Sid White Field Friday evening to root on the Riverhawks.

-The department successfully broadcast the Riverhawks/Redmond football game via the NFHS Network Friday evening. The broadcast had more than 100 views.

-The Dalles Youth Football raised close to $700 on concessions during the varsity football game this past Friday. Thank you to everyone who supports our youth programs!

-I continue to get reports that some are not obeying the district policy and guidelines on masks at TDHS sporting events. Please do your best to follow protocols, so our student-athletes can get through a full season!

-Finally, I wish to thank EVERYONE who volunteered at the varsity football game this past Friday. The event went off without a hitch, and that is because of the hard work and dedication of volunteers like you! So from the bottom of my heart, I appreciate each and every one of you!

NWCSD #21 COVID-19 Athletics Protocols:

-For indoor sporting events, all guests, participating athletes, bench athletes, coaches, event workers, volunteers, and officials are required to wear masks at all times.

-For outdoor sporting events, all guests, bench athletes, coaches, volunteers and workers are required to wear masks. Game officials and participating athletes do not have to wear masks while competing in game-action.

That was the week that was, and what’s coming up in Riverhawkland! I encourage you to come out and support our student-athletes, practice social distancing, be safe, and as always, GO RIVERHAWKS!

- Athletic Director Bily Brost
