Riverhawks State Track & Field Championships, Setting Records and Making Memories

Last weekend, 14  Riverhawks competed in their final events of the season at the State Track & Field meet at UofO. Compared to Districts, racing conditions in Eugene were about perfect: clear, cool, and with that special dose of “Hayward magic” on the track. Somewhere between magic and hard work, many saw PRs and competitive placings: a satisfying close to a great season.

Consistency and Grit: Riverhawks' Cross Country Team's Promising Start to the Season

Cross-country runners are, in general, pretty mild-mannered individuals. Polite to a fault, involved in most of the community activities, as comfortable talking with adults as their peers, and signed up for as many honors courses as they could fit textbooks for. It’s always a bit of a surprise, then, when some hidden ferocity comes to light: charging up hills like warriors, arms pumping into a finish or battling (rolling?) through a mud pit...and once finished, wiping the mud off and cooling down.

Riverhawk Track: Seasonal Swings from Cold to Hot mirrored in personal records

By far one of the most exciting races of the afternoon was Leo Lemman’s 3000m in Oregon City on Saturday, April 23. Consistent splits, with improved leg speed from racing the 400m and 800m at Hood River got him to the front of the pack, with a scorching time of 9:05, a 13-second personal best. Junior Fiona Dunlop wrested the PR crown on Saturday’s 1500 in Oregon City, coming in at 5:36, a 24-second, all-time personal best.
