TD Stalwart Karl Vercouteren, we will miss you

The Dalles, Ore., May 27, 2025 — It is with heavy heart that we learned of Karl Vercouteren’s passing on Saturday, May 25.
Karl was a local pastor and historian in The Dalles and a heavy contributor to CCCNews here in The Dalles. He was the first to send us history items from the Original Wasco County Courthouse as well as the monthly happenings at The Dalles Kiwanians starting in 2020.
He also wrote two historical books on the buildings of The Dalles in a collaboration with The Dalles Art Center, which will be used for decades if not centuries to come as our town continues to hang on its standing as one of the original economic epicenters of Oregon, becoming a town two years before the state even received statehood in 1859.
His dedication in diseminating quality local information inspired Robin, one of our founders into starting CCCNews.
“Karl showed up, always. He was a huge bank of local knowledge with his consistent dedication to history and community. He always knew what was going on, and I will always remember him popping up in my email with those consistent reminders to be part of this community,” Robin Added.

Vercouteren wrote All Together The Dalles (2022) and All Together The Dalles Too (2023).
Both books are integral to the community's efforts to preserve and celebrate its historical architecture. They were also connected to local events, such as the Mural Fest of 2022, where Vercouteren contributed to the selection and research of mural subjects.
Karl was one of the most dependable and giving people we have met here at CCCNews. His contributions will be sorely missed. Our condolences go out to his family and friends, and a certain thud was soundly felt here by his departure - Tom Peterson, Robin Denning, Joshuah Albert, and Peggy Peterson
