TDHS Students Clean Up the Streets During Fly Up Day
The Dalles, Ore., March 6, 2024 – The Dalles High schoolers got half the day off of school on Feb 23 to accommodate TD’s Middle School Fly Up Day and some of those high schoolers chose to spend the day volunteering to better their community.
What is Fly Up Day?
The fly-up day allows eighth graders to get a look at The Dalles High School and make informed decisions about what electives they want to take next year in High School. Students tour the campus and preview elective classes, and extracurriculars such as the National Honor Society, Key Club, Leadership, and E-Sports.
While eighth graders considered their futures, ten high schoolers chose to spend their day volunteering with The Dalles Main Street to clean up downtown The Dalles.
“We’re trying to promote giving back to the community and using time wisely by having volunteer time for our high school students to complete their community service hours,” said Stephanie Bowen, North Wasco County District 21 spokesperson.
Students need 24 community service hours to graduate.
Students from TDHS spent three hours sweeping gravel off sidewalks and picking up trash in the downtown area.
Anthony Pereira of The Dalles Main Street helped provide students with brooms, trash bags, and some motivation saying Main Street’s main focus for the last three years has been community clean-ups.
