The Dalles, Ore., Oct. 15, 2025 — The Dalles Art Center (TDAC) is excited to announce a new Artist-in-Residence program at Colonel Wright Elementary School, featuring celebrated watercolor artist Elizabeth Zimmerman.
Funded by the Oregon Arts Commission’s Arts Learning Grant, this innovative program brings professional artists directly into the classroom, providing students with hands-on opportunities to explore creative expression and develop their artistic skills, while providing teachers with the confidence and skillset to continue implementing the arts into the regular curriculum.
Over the course of the residency, Zimmerman will lead students through a series of watercolor workshops, introducing techniques in color theory, brushwork, and composition. Students will learn to express their personal stories and ideas through art, fostering both confidence and creativity in a supportive environment.
The residency will culminate with students preparing original pieces to be included in the Student Art Show, TDAC’s annual exhibition celebrating the artistic achievements of local youth. The Student Art Show is also open to any child wishing to participate, providing a broader platform for young artists across the community.
In addition to working with students, Zimmerman will collaborate with the school’s teachers to integrate watercolor into the everyday curriculum. By instructing educators in watercolor techniques, Zimmerman will help ensure that this creative practice continues beyond the residency, enriching art instruction for years to come.
“Art has the power to inspire and empower young people,” said Ellen Woods Potter, Executive Director of TDAC. “We’re thrilled to bring Elizabeth’s expertise and passion for watercolor directly to Colonel Wright students, and to equip teachers with the tools to continue this work in their classrooms. This residency, made possible through funding from the Oregon Arts Commission, creates a lasting impact on both students and educators.”
