The Dalles Kiwanis Jan. Programs focus on Gorge Comission and Land Acknowledgements

Kiwanis meetings are held every Thursday at noon at Spooky’s and visitors are welcome. This week’s events include:

— Jan. 12 is noontime social gathering.

Carina Miller will speak about her work with Columbia River Gorge Commission

— Jan. 19 Carina Miller, the first indigenous chair of the Columbia River Gorge Commission, will speak about her work with the commission and various groups dealing with Native American issues.

— Jan. 26 Lucille Begay, Native American Liaison at Columbia Gorge Educational Service District, will discuss land acknowledgments.

Karl Vercouteren

Karl Vercouteren came to The Dalles in 1977 to become pastor of United Church of Christ Congregational. Early on he joined Cascade Singers and the Original Courthouse board, reflecting life-long interests in music and history. Since retirement in 2008 he has taken on several projects writing about local history.
