The Dalles Riverhawk Football Team Loses to Redmond at Home
By Xavier Orion Olaez
The Dalles Riverhawks Football team played their second game of the season against league rival the Redmond Panthers on Sept. 17 at Sid White Field.
The Hawks game was canceled last week so they practiced that to get extra work in. They came into last night’s game ready to compete after trying to settle in after their first game which was a loss to the Forest Grove Vikings.
They unfortunately lost to the Panthers 76-12.
The Hawks' first quarter was jam-packed with entertaining plays and scores. The Panthers scored three times very fast all being rushing touchdowns after shutting down the Hawks on offense. Then the Hawks started to move the ball but, with 5 minutes left in the first quarter, the Hawks threw a pick-six and Redmond was up 25-0. Then off of another turnover, Redmond ran a double-reverse pass for a touchdown and getting the PAT making 32-0. The rest of the first quarter was a quick back n forth but with 1:56 left to go in the first quarter, Redmond fumbles on a screen pass, and senior Jaxon Pullen picks it up and runs it back 55 yards for a touchdown. The Hawks missed the PAT making it 32-6. 20 seconds later Redmond throws a 40-yard touchdown pass to make it 40-6 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was a slugfest with both defenses doing really well until Redmond scored a rushing touchdown with 6 minutes left to go in the second quarter and then scored again with 2:40 left in the second. At halftime, it was 54-6 with Redmond leading.
The third quarter was the same as the second quarter with both defenses holding each other to no scores in a physical game. Redmond then scored with 6 minutes left in the third quarter making it 60-6. The defenses then battled again until the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter started with a Redmond touchdown and a 2 point conversion making it 68- 6. With 7:25 left in the game, Redmond ran in another touchdown making the game 76-6. The Hawks never gave up though and scored a touchdown with 12 seconds left in the game but missed the 2 point conversion with the end score being 76-12.
Although it was a really tough game for the Hawks they improved a lot from the first game. They were able to move the ball down the field and seemed a little more confident and comfortable. Like I said before, the more the season goes on they’re going to get better and better no matter the outcome.
The Hawks play next week on Friday, Sept. 24 at 7 PM against La Salle Prep in Milwaukie.
