2021 Riverhawks Basketball Preview
By Xavier Orion Olaez
The Dalles High School basketball season starts next week. I got to talk to the coaches of the men’s and women’s teams today. They gave me a small rundown on their teams and season this year.
The women's team this year is coached by Keith Howe. I asked him “Who’s on varsity this year? Any returning players too look out for?” He said “Our varsity team is all new athletes with no returning players from last year. Our posts are led by seniors Keisha Oregon and Cadence Snyder. We have a very young backcourt led by sophomore transfer Natasha Muzechenko. Hanna Ziegenhagen will be back after taking last year off. We have juniors Marissa and Monica Rojas at guard with 2 sophomore guards Veronica Robledo and Lily Schatz. We will likely have two freshman step into varsity roles this year, Jazmine DeLaCruz will be a post, and Jeilane Stewart will be a point guard. We have a very young team full of great girls who work hard in practice and will do their best in games.”
They have 10 league games, 5 home and 5 away.
The men's team coached by Greg Cummings this year has been a little difficult to put together. They have about 22 kids so far and 8 or 9 more after track and baseball end. They play 10 league games and 1 non-league game.
Both teams are excited to have a season and to play their best. The first men's basketball game is against Bend next Friday May 21st at 6:30 PM in Bend. The women’s team goes against Redmond on Tuesday May 25th at 6:30 PM in The Dalles.
