This Week at The Dalles Library: Aug. 3, 2026
The Dalles, Ore., Aug. 2, 2026 — The Dalles Public Library will offer crafts, games, family programs, a virtual Smithsonian presentation, and a live flamenco fusion performance during the first full week of August.
Unless otherwise noted, programs are free and take place at The Dalles Public Library, 722 Court St. Registration may be required for some events.
Monday, Aug. 3
Spice Kit Take and Make — All day
Teens and adults may pick up a Spice Kit Take and Make kit at the circulation desk. Each monthly kit includes a recipe selected by library staff and some of the spices needed to prepare the dish.
Kits are available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
Shadow Boxes — 2 to 4 p.m.
Teens can create shadow boxes in the Teen Room using photos or keepsakes brought from home or supplies provided by the library.
Materials are available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
Mah Jongg: Afternoon Session — 3:30 to 5 p.m.
Teens and adults ages 14 and older can play Mah Jongg in the Meeting Room. Registration is required and closes at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 3.
Mah Jongg: Evening Session — 5:30 to 7 p.m.
A second Mah Jongg session will be offered for teens and adults ages 14 and older in the Meeting Room. Registration is required and closes at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 3.
Tuesday, Aug. 4
Virtual program: The Legacy of Julia Child’s Kitchen — 11 a.m. to noon
Smithsonian curator and public historian Paula J. Johnson will discuss the life and influence of cooking icon Julia Child during a virtual presentation.
Johnson is the author of “Julia Child’s Kitchen: The Design, Tools, Stories, and Legacy of an Iconic Space.” She helped collect Child’s home kitchen for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History and serves as director of the Smithsonian’s Food History Project.
The program will explore Child’s kitchen, culinary tools, television career and continuing influence on American food culture. Registration is required for the virtual event.
Quilling with Corina — 11 a.m. to noon
Participants of all ages can learn the art of paper quilling in the Meeting Room. The workshop will teach participants how to roll, shape and arrange narrow strips of paper into decorative designs.
All materials will be provided.
Crazy Craft Club: Dragon’s Eye — 4 to 5:30 p.m.
Children ages 8 to 12 can create a dragon’s eye during Crazy Craft Club in the Makerspace.
The program features large, colorful and sometimes messy art projects for children and tweens. An accompanying adult must remain at the library and participate with the child. Drop-offs are not permitted.
Thursday, Aug. 6
Library Scouts: Entomology Badge — 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.
Children ages 8 to 12 can explore entomology during a Library Scouts meeting in the Children’s Wing.
Library Scouts is an inclusive, hands-on program that combines outdoor exploration, community involvement and science, technology, engineering, art and math activities. Registration is required and closes at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 6.
Family Sweets and Stories Night — 6 to 7 p.m.
Families can enjoy desserts, coloring and a read-aloud program in the Main Library. A librarian may share chapters from a community read, a short story, poetry or another family-friendly selection.
The library cannot guarantee that food served during the program has not come into contact with tree nuts, soy or other allergens.
Friday, Aug. 7
Puzzle Exchange — All day
Community members can bring a used puzzle to the library and exchange it for another puzzle during an all-day swap.
Fun Fridays — 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Elementary school-age children can participate in games, crafts, art and technology activities in the Children’s Wing.
The program is designed primarily for children ages 5 to 10, but all children are welcome.
First Friday Bunco Bash — 5 to 7 p.m.
Adults and mature teens can play Bunco during a social game night in the Meeting Room. New and experienced players are welcome, and light snacks will be provided.
Registration is required and closes at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 7.
Saturday, Aug. 8
Gladius Live Performance: Flamenco Fusion — 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Award-winning guitarist Gladius will perform a free outdoor concert featuring a blend of Spanish flamenco, classical guitar and modern rock influences.
The all-ages performance will take place outside the library. Attendees are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket.
Gladius is an Atlanta-raised composer and guitarist whose musical influences include classical guitarist Andrés Segovia and rock guitarist Eddie Van Halen. He has performed nationwide since 2016.
Family Board Game Afternoons — 2 to 4 p.m.
Families can play classic and contemporary board games in the Main Library. Available games may include Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, Chutes and Ladders, Wingspan, Clue, Mysterium, Guess Who and Operation.
Light snacks will be provided. The program is offered on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month.
KidQuest — 2 to 4 p.m.
Children ages 6 to 11 can learn the basics of role-playing games, create characters and participate in collaborative storytelling adventures in the Children’s Wing.
The program encourages creativity, teamwork and improvisation. Snacks will be provided.
