This Week at The Dalles Library: Aug 31, 2026

The Dalles, Ore., Aug. 31, 2026 — The Dalles Public Library opens September with crafts, music, family programs, Pilates, gaming, improv and more, offering activities for children, teens and adults Sept. 1-5.

Tuesday, Sept. 1

Spice Kit Take and Make — All day
Teens and adults can pick up the library’s monthly Spice Kit Take and Make at the circulation desk. Kits are available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

Take & Make: Book Kit Bundle — All day
Children in grades 1-3 can pick up a September Book Kit Bundle featuring Murray & Bun: Murray the Pirate by Adam Stower. Each kit includes a book to keep, activities, crafts and other themed items. One kit per family while supplies last. Children who read the book may also write a letter to the children’s librarian and turn it in for a prize.

The Democracy We Must Keep with David O. Stewart — 11 a.m. to noon, virtual
Award-winning historian David O. Stewart will discuss his book, The Democracy We Must Keep, and the ideas and documents that shaped American democracy. The program explores the nation’s founders, limits on political power, individual rights and the responsibilities of citizens in preserving democratic government. Registration is required for the virtual event.

Quilling with Corina — 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Meeting Room
Participants of all ages can learn the art of paper quilling, using thin strips of paper to create decorative designs. The hands-on workshop is open to beginners and experienced crafters, and all materials are provided.

Wednesday, Sept. 2

Adult Art Club: Felted Dryer Balls — 1 to 2:30 p.m., Meeting Room
Adults are invited to take part in an arts and crafts session featuring felted dryer balls.

Thursday, Sept. 3

Mat Pilates with Shannon Red Cloud — 9 to 10 a.m., Meeting Room
Adults can take part in a mat Pilates class focused on strength, flexibility and balance through controlled movement. Exercises can be modified for different fitness levels. Participants should be comfortable moving between standing and the floor. No equipment is required.

Hook Club — 5:30 to 7 p.m., Makerspace
Teens and adults are invited to join the library’s monthly crochet-along, creating squares inspired by books they have read. Yarn is provided, and participants can talk books, trade recommendations and crochet together. Beginners are welcome, although participants should have or begin learning basic crochet skills.

Family Sweets and Stories Night — 6 to 7 p.m., Main Library
Families can enjoy desserts, coloring and a librarian read-aloud featuring stories, poetry or selections from a community read. The program is open to all ages. Food served at the event may have come into contact with allergens including tree nuts and soy.

Kerry Grombacher: Western Troubadour — 6 to 7 p.m., Meeting Room
Award-winning songwriter Kerry Grombacher will perform original contemporary folk and western music on guitar and mandolin. His songs draw on landscapes and stories from the desert Southwest, Montana, the Northwest and his home near New Orleans. The performance is open to all ages.

Friday, Sept. 4

Fun Fridays: Improv Theater — 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., Meeting Room
Elementary-age children can take part in an improv theater session as part of the library’s Fun Fridays series. The program is designed primarily for children ages 5-10, although everyone is welcome.

First Friday Bunco Bash — 5 to 7 p.m., Meeting Room
Adults and mature teens can play Bunco during a relaxed social game night. Beginners and experienced players are welcome, and light snacks will be provided. Registration is required and closes at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 4.

Saturday, Sept. 5

Craft Supply Exchange — 10 to 11:30 a.m., Meeting Room
Adults can bring new or gently used craft supplies to trade with other local crafters. Supplies may be dropped off beginning at 10 a.m. People who bring items may begin browsing at 10:30 a.m., and the exchange opens to everyone at 11 a.m. Any unclaimed items left after 11:30 a.m. will be considered donations to the library.

Share & Show: Swordplay with Andy Plymate — 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Main Library
Andy Plymate of Bridge City Blades will demonstrate historical swordsmanship and fencing techniques based on centuries-old manuals. After the demonstration, children will have an opportunity to ask questions and see the equipment used by practitioners. The program is open to all ages.

Lunch & Learn: Emoji Improv for Kids — Noon to 1 p.m., Meeting Room
Children ages 7-12 can build confidence, creativity and communication skills through theater games, improvisation, storytelling and imaginative play. No acting experience is required, and lunch will be provided. Registration is required.

VR Gaming — 1 to 3 p.m.
Teens can try virtual reality gaming at the library. Space and equipment are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
