LadderBall giving corn hole a run for its money.

Since their incarnation a few months ago, The Dalles’ Exit 84 Band has an updated lineup. Founder John Donovan (guitar) reports that he is now joined by Columbia River Music alum and longtime Sceptre Brother Dan Ross on drums, Bob Bailey (also with Sceptre Bros.) on Dobro, Kerry Williams (Wasco Bros, Django’s Cadillac) on mandolin and Rob Nueberger on bass. The band’s set at Smoke Wring BBQ in The Dalles last Saturday included original songs by Donovan, some classic Hank Williams and a special 911 Tribute segment. Also of note: It looked like the popularity of LadderBall (as mentioned a few columns ago) is increasing as an alternative to Corn Hole for outdoor summer fun. Monolith Monsters at Granada

Screen Shot 2021-09-13 at 1.57.00 PM.png

I love seeing this kind of stuff because I’m a sci-fi fan and I’ve got the Books to Prove It. I’ve found that some of the best writing occurred in the 30s, 40s and 50s. That’s why it’s so cool that classic vintage Science Fiction movies are coming to The Granada Theater as they present Monolith Monsters, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 17-18. This 1957 classic stars Grant Williams as a geologist and Lola Albright as a schoolteacher, who try to solve the mystery of a strange meteor that has spread fragments that grow into giant skyscraper-sized crystals. Doors open at 5:30, show at 6 p.m.

Be a Kid Again with HR Library storytime

OK, I’m admitting that the recent Hood River Library Storytime video found its way onto my FB feed last week, and I’m admitting that I took the time to watch it because I’m just really a big kid at heart. And you know what? It was fun. It kicked off with “Song Time,” a catchy, well-played and sung jazz tune about what to expect for the show. And then we learned about “Cat at Night,” and all the adventures he encountered. And then we went into the “Stuff on a Plate” segment, and learned how to make delicious Strawberry Lemonade and more right from the “studio-kitchen.” And then we learned all about a silly Cupcake, who eventually realized how to make friends with all of the other snack foods just by being true to herself. Bottom line: It’s OK to be a Kid Again. Treat Yourself to Storytime, you’ll be Glad You Did!

P.S. - send an email to jana@hoodriverlibrary.org and get a “Stuff on a Plate” Poster so you can follow along at home.
