Two-vehicle crash on I-84 caused by deer; no injuries reported

The Dalles, Ore., May 9, 2025 A pair of crashes on Interstate 84 near milepost 55 Thursday morning, May 8, left no one injured but resulted in significant vehicle and guardrail damage, according to Oregon State Police.

The first crash occurred around 10:15 a.m., when a blue 2018 Subaru Forester struck a deer that entered the westbound lanes near Hood River. The driver, Daniel Isaac Uribe, 34, of Hood River, said traffic had begun to slow and shift within lanes moments before the collision. Uribe attempted to decelerate but hit the deer head-on. He was able to steer the vehicle to the shoulder.

OSP said the deer died at the scene. Uribe was not injured, but the Subaru was disabled and later towed by River’s Edge Towing. No citations were issued in the first crash.

About three minutes later, a second crash was reported at the same location. A white Freightliner box truck swerved to avoid the deer carcass and collided with the Subaru parked on the shoulder, OSP said. The truck then veered into the guardrail, destroying approximately 50 to 60 feet of it before coming to a stop on top of the barrier.

The driver, Darian Roberto Perez Rosales, 25, was cited for failure to maintain a single lane of travel. The truck was towed from the scene by Guzman Brothers Towing. No injuries were reported in the second crash.

OSP was assisted at the scene by the Hood River County Sheriff's Office and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
