After officially warming up, The Dalles High School Cheer walks into the large blow-up tunnel shaped like a wolf’s head. They peer through the plastic curtains and watch two other teams compete. Uniforms are adjusted for the last time. Finally, it is time to perform when they are announced over the speakers. After a 1-2-3 HAWKS! TDHS cheer skips out and takes the mat.
After spiriting out, they go through the routine, dancing, cheering, and stunting. Everyone’s training and hard work goes into the less than three-minute routine.

This season has been challenging.
Many athletes left, which made it necessary to change the Traditional routine to “Game Day”. Some athletes were disappointed. However, that did not stop the squad’s spirit!
TDHS cheer has gone on to win first place in four out of four of their winter season competitions, making them undefeated. They are now perfecting their Game Day routine for the OSAA State Championship, which happens today, Feb. 9th.
“I am very excited about our upcoming state competition,” said Head Coach Kris Vassar. “The girls have worked incredibly hard and now get a chance to show off their great Game Day routine.”
Tickets to go support them in Oregon City can be bought at www.osaa.org/shop/tickets.
Many people only see sideline cheer, not realizing that cheerleading is a competitive sport.
The Dalles High School Cheer puts a lot of effort into supporting other sports and the community while remaining competition-ready. On January 25th, TDHS Cheer had its annual Kids Cheer Clinic.
Participants in the clinic were given a bow and shirt. They were also taught two chants and a song. These were showcased the next day in the basketball game’s halftime show. Parents and students at the basketball game enjoyed watching the show. Everyone involved had a great time.
At the same game, seniors Alexia Diaz, Aris Castaneda, Katelyn Vassar, Lanie Dirks, and Lidia Prieto were recognized. Their goals for after they graduate high school and favorite memories were read from their bios. Each senior had a sash, a gift basket, and a sign made by their teammates for them.
Congratulations to our cheerleading seniors!
Earlier in the season, TDHS cheerleading ran a fundraiser selling raffle tickets. They sold the tickets for two weeks to family, friends, neighbors, and businesses. Thanks to all who supported the fundraiser by purchasing tickets.
The winner received a family trip, and could choose between the destinations of Belize, the US Virgin Islands, or Disneyland.
Cheerleading will have a state sendoff with a police escort. This happens today, Feb. 9 at 1 p.m. if you are interested in showing up to support The Dalles Cheerleading. LET’S GO HAWKS!
