Volunteer Opportunities: adventures in kindness abound

File Photo - Juanita and David Neitling several years ago show off Riverfront Trail and the plaque David received for maintaining it. He and Juanita spent decades making it better for everyone. Why? Because it made them feel good. Maybe you want to feel good too? Below Emily Whitfield gives us the 911 on volunteer opportunities in this new column.

The Columbia Gorge runs on volunteers.

From community meals to art galleries and farmers markets, hundreds of residents quietly give their time each week to keep local programs thriving and sometimes, afloat. The opportunities are as diverse as the people who fill them — and the rewards, science says, goes far beyond the hours they spend helping.

Volunteering builds strong social connections and can create a sense of purpose and community — especially in small communities like ours, where every helping hand has a visible impact.

If you’re retired, new to town, or just looking to make a difference, there’s a place for you to pitch in. Below are a few organizations currently welcoming volunteers across The Dalles area.  Check back with Emily and CCCNews as new opportunities are posted.

The Dalles Farmers Market: Every Saturday from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM, June through October. Volunteers help create a welcoming, knowledgeable space for local growers, artisans, and community members to not only shop but connect.
