The Dalles, Ore.Jan. 31, 2025 – The Wasco Public Library hosted a hands-on cooking event for children on Jan. 30, featuring students from The Dalles High School Advanced Cooking Class. The Kid-Friendly Cooking Class invited children from pre-K to fifth grade to observe and participate in a simple, fun recipe demonstration.
On the menu was pizza in a mug, a quick and easy dish that had young participants eager to try their hand at cooking. The library was filled with excited children as high school chefs distributed ingredients, including bread, eggs, pizza sauce, and cheese. Each child mixed their ingredients in a mug before handing them over to the student chefs, who cooked the pizzas for them.
The event was led by Crystal Haggard, a Career and Technical Education (CTE) and Culinary Arts teacher at The Dalles High School. Haggard, 42, brought members of the high school’s Chef’s Club to assist with the class.
“It’s an awesome club at the high school that makes some really awesome food,” Haggard said.
Participants were able to take home a copy of the recipe, encouraging them to recreate the dish with their families.
