The Dalles, Ore., Jan. 25, 2024 — The Dalles City Council unanimously approved a $2.15 million storm drain and sewer upgrade on West Second Street at its regular council meeting on Monday, Jan. 22.
The project is a continuation of the utility upgrades on West 2nd and for The Port of The Dalles area in general, allowing for expanding developments that produce larger flow amounts in both sewage and storm runoff.
Back in Spring 2018, Crestline Construction installed an 18-inch water main, upsizing over a mile of sanitary sewer main and installing over a mile of stormwater main in west 2nd Street from the cul-de-sac north of Hostetler Street to the front of the PUD substation property just north of the D21 bus shelter property.
Surveyors have already begun work on the project providing flagging and elevations along Second Street from the North Wasco County School District Bus Barn to the intersection of Weber and 2nd streets.
Councilors authorized City Manager Matthew Klebes to enter into a contract with Ajax Northwest LLC of Hood River for the utility improvement for $2.15 million.
Ajax Owner Nicholas Jacobs said work is expected to start on Feb. 6 and will include daytime closures in the northwest bound lane. The project is expected to be complete by June 14, he said.
“Nathan Wilson of The Dalles will be our foreman on that project,” Jacob said on Friday, Jan. 26. “We’re excited to be working in The Dalles and getting the project.”
During the last construction phase of the sewer pipe on Second street, the road was closed in both directions intermittently as digging and construction occurred.
Ajax Northwest is now slated to install 2,200 linear feet of 18-inch sewer lines and 1,800 linear feet of storm drain pipe from the 1800 block of W. 2nd Street to Weber Street.
The build-out is another piece of the infrastructure required to properly service the Port District, according to city officials.
“City Engineering Staff has performed modeling of the existing sanitary sewer main lines from the Port area to the City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant Facility. To be able to adequately accommodate possible new and expanding developments in the area and the projected additional flow amounts, the sanitary sewer line located along the W. 2nd Street corridor needs to be upsized,” according to the staff report given by Public Works Director Dave Anderson.
