Understanding the Day of the Dead

Editor’s Note: C. Nayeli Vazquez called and asked CCCNews if we would be interested in a personal explanation of the Day of The Dead, a holiday that originated in Mexico and that is widely celebrated all over Latin America. We applaud C. Nayeli for reaching out and hope others will do the same. CCCNews wants to share the cultures of all who call The Dalles home.

What is the Day of the Dead for you?
For us, it has a great meaning behind a culture full of traditions.
Celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, where we honor the souls of our departed loved ones with prayers, prayers and songs.
Creating a representation that we call "Altar of the Dead".
With offerings and other things with meaning for our loved ones.
For us it is to celebrate life after death, remembering all those who have gone before us to a new life, but are still in our hearts.
Among flowers, tastes of food, drinks, antojitos, candles, and alebrijes to guide and illuminate their path where we believe that someday we will meet again.
For our home, placing the Altar of the Dead with its offering is something very special, as it helps us to connect the two worlds. The spiritual with the earthly.

Making us coexist with our loved ones.
Not physically, but in soul and connection.
We believe that, during the stay of the Altar of the Dead, our loved ones return from beyond to visit us. And that by the light of the candles being lit, the spirits will be guided to the altar where they will enjoy the offerings placed by us by their relatives. Keeping some of the most important things in the offerings that are represented with the four elements earth, wind, water and fire.
Among other things, the Altar of the Dead includes photographs of family members no longer present which also helps the spirits to know the place where they will be reunited with their relatives. Altars of three levels, like this one, represent heaven, earth and the underworld. But it can also be, hell, heaven and earth along with the representation of the Holy Trinity.
Without missing the representative flower for those already missing, which are the marigolds, a vibrant and fragrant flower. And with nothing more to say, among traditions, beliefs and cultures.
The Day of the Dead is to celebrate that their souls return once again to feel the love of their relatives. It is to honor the afterlife and thus, to wait for our time.
Because to remember them is to live again. To live forever, in our minds and hearts.
