Jazz Collective Big Band at Elks Nov. 14

The Jazz Collective Big Band presents a classic swing concert and dance on Sunday, Nov. 14, starting at 7 p.m. at the Hood River Elks. Since 2015, music director Mark Steighner has been leading this high-energy ensemble geared up for jazz and big band swing. Admission by donation.

Classic Movies at Granada Theater

Go back to 1941 with the musical comedy “That Night in Rio” at the Granada Theater in The Dalles coming up Nov. 12 and 13. With Carmen Miranda, Alice Faye and Don Ameche. It will be an evening of “Chica Chica Boom Chic” and Fruit Hats in Stunning Technicolor! Doors open 5:30 p.m., dinner available.

‘Day Job’ at Columbia Center for Arts

The art show at Columbia Center for the Arts in Hood River reminds us “Don’t Quit Your Day Job.” The November showcase gives an “immersive experience of what it is to make art, to create artistic expression, when sales of artworks are not the artist’s sole source of income.” Works by Mark Rothko, Mickalene Thomas, Jackson Pollock, Keith Haring, Yayoi Kusama and Barbara Kruger are featured. But why, why does that Classic Country Song from Johnny Paycheck keep haunting my mind?? 

TD Art Center presents P.K. Hoffman

The Dalles Art Center presents P.K. Hoffman Retrospective

Described as a Clayman, and Artist and Humorist, P.K. Hoffman has been conducting pottery classes since the 1970s with his Salt Fire Workshops. Still teaching at the local Community College, Hoffman’s Large Vase work and other aspects of his unusual art career is being celebrated at The Dalles Art Center through Nov. 24

Southern Sons at Route 30, Nov. 13

‘Schwag,’ ‘Southern Sons’ at Route 30

Two Big Shows coming up at Route 30 in The Dalles: on Friday, Nov. 12, starting at 7 p.m., get a Grateful Dead Experience with “Schwag,” a “high energy organic interpretations” of the vibe and music of the legendary Grateful Dead. Schwag has played 3000 concerts since forming in 1991. On Saturday, Nov. 13, it’s Southern Rock with the “Southern Sons.” (pictured) 7-10 p.m. This five-piece Portland area band says Grab Your Boots and Hat and Get Ready to Rock the Joint!

Critics rightfully say Furtado is a virtuoso on banjo and slide guitar because he’s continually taken Roots and Bluegrass music of the past into his catalog of 17 albums and has made his own folk-rock crossover genre. Umm, make that 18, as a new Banjo album hit’s the airwaves this month. Catch Tony (other sources say the band will be a trio) on Thursday, Nov. 11, at Hood River’s Ruins. 6-9 p.m., ticketed show. Proof of Vax required.

Dub, Reggae and Hip Hop at River City

Coming to Hood River’s River City Saloon on Friday, Nov. 12, a free show featuring The Green Room, billed as Dub, Rock and Reggae from Portland, and support from Rob The Universe “exploring hip-hop music exploring the relationship between the mind and universe through a science fiction lens.” Does that mean the Soundtrack to Forbidden Planet be Reimagined? Music starts at 9 p.m. 

Big Show at Eagles Nov. 20

Get tickets now for a Huge Tribute Show at The Dalles’ Eagles on Saturday, Nov. 20, as Jamie’s Rock and Roll Legends presents The Legend of Johnny Cash, along with tributes to Willy Nelson, Kenny Rogers and Patsy Cline. Cemetery Tales Live Screenings in November 

Live screenings of the popular Cemetery Tales returns, giving the public more chances to “witness historical storytelling.” Dates, locations and times are listed below. Tickets to these productions benefit Hood River County Heritage Council.

‘Collision of Rhythm’ at Civic Nov. 9

Mid-Columbia Community Concert Association welcomes “Collision of Rhythm” to The Dalles Civic Auditorium on Tuesday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. Doors and Club 22 will open at 6 p.m. food and drinks are available. Collision of Rhythm is a duo composed of tap-dancing classical virtuoso Aaron Williams and beatbox-juggling keynote speaker, Bronkar Lee. Though there are only two of them, they fill the stage as a 12-person ensemble would, moving from instrument to instrument with a high level of skill and diversity.  With drumming, tap dancing, rhythmic juggling, marimba, piano, saxophone, flute and so much more, the show has been described as “Stomp meets Blue Man meets Cirque du Soleil.” The pure joy that music and rhythm has instilled within these two humans is extended to every audience member throughout the performance. Between choreographed musical pieces, there is audience interaction, humor, and personal stories that make this show all at once captivating, inspiring, and flat-out extraordinary. Portland Book Festival 2021 goes Virtual

Looking for ways to learn about NW writers and the Books they publish? The Portland Book Festival 2021 goes virtual this year. Presented by Bank of America, The Portland Book Festival and Podcast Episodes of The Archive Project will take place Nov. 8–12, and will be live streamed on PDXBookFest.org. Expect insights, interviews, conversations and lectures from Poets, Novelists and Children’s Book Authors, who are immersed in the art of storytelling and creating community.
