Woman Injured in two-wheeled car wreck on West Fourth in TD

The Dalles, Ore., Aug. 8, 2023 - A woman was injured during a driving accident in the 300 block of West Fourth Street in The Dalles on Monday, Aug. 7.

She was driving westbound when her vehicle collided with a 2008 Subaru Outback parked in front of the Herbring House.

Her vehicle, a white Honda CRV, could be seen driving up the driver's rear quarter panel and going up on two wheels before coming to rest back on all four tires in the center of the street.

Eyewitnesses said the woman was apologetic about the crash and sustained some injuries. She was taken to Adventist Health Columbia Gorge, MCMC campus, in The Dalles, according to The Dalles Police Log.

The report also states the woman’s vehicle was disabled by the wreck. The passenger’s front wheel snapped off, according to the log.

Victor Johnson, who is the owner of the 2008 Subaru said the damage was unfortunate, but it was only a car, noting his concern was more for the injured woman.

Johnson also noted that Fourth Street bottlenecks some in front of the Herbring House where the right of way expands from 5 feet to 10 feet to include an area for trees. In turn, that forces parked vehicles further into the street and nearer passing vehicles.

Vehicles in general often drive over the speed limit on Fourth Street because there is a long stretch without stop signs between Union Street and West Third Place.

Johnson suggested the commercial/ residential street should have some calming devices such as bump-outs and trees to slow traffic down. Also, there are no easily visible speed limit signs on that stretch of the street to tell drivers what the speed limit is. One could assume it is a 20 mph zone as it falls in the commercial district, but how would someone new to town or a new driver know if they can not see a sign?

The 20 mph sign at the corner of Fourth and Third Street Place in The Dalles for driver’s headed west.
