Anglers’ car burgled while fishing in remote area of Deschutes River

By Tom Peterson

Two Canadians had their vehicle broken into while fishing on a remote section of the Deschutes River on Saturday, Aug. 5, according to the Wasco County Sheriff’s log.

The two men had left their vehicle on Freebridge Road about seven miles from the mouth of the Deschutes while they were tossing flies for steelhead in a nice run at Kloan.

Freebridge Road is a 3.5-mile remnant of a wagon trail that cuts precariously through the Deschutes Canyon to the river and tilts to the downhill side. The road drops some 850 feet.

The Canadians told Wasco County 9-1-1 dispatchers that they believed the car was broken into between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m. that morning.

The pair said they were not concerned so much with the items that were taken but needed to report that their passports were also taken during the theft and they did not know their passport numbers.

They reported a wallet, clothing, and fishing rods were also taken from the car.

Dispatchers advised them to speak with the Canadian Consulate for guidance and were given a sheriff’s log number as proof of the incident.
