Obituary: Lucille Hodges, Hermiston, The Dalles

Lucille Hodges

Lucille Hodges, age 95, passed away on July 28th in Hermiston, Oregon. She was surrounded by family members in her home where she had been lovingly cared for by her eldest daughter Julie.

Lucille was born in 1927 to Joseph and Helen (Hrabick) Vana and spent her early years in Portland, Oregon. She lived in the same house until marriage and had an enjoyable childhood with her loving parents. She lost two siblings: Vernon who died of pneumonia at age 1, and Donnie who died in a car accident at age 5. She graduated from Washington High School in 1945 and then worked at an insurance company as a receptionist and typist. She married Robert “Bob” Hodges on December 4, 1946, in Portland where they lived for another 13 years before moving to The Dalles in 1959.

Lucille was a loving wife and mother who spent her life serving her family, her church and her community. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where she enjoyed serving the young Primary children as well as playing the organ for many years.

She taught piano lessons for many young students in the area. When her husband retired, they shared their love of music with the residents of care facilities in The Dalles and Hood River. They loved boosting the spirits of the residents with sing-a-longs and flag waving. Lucille and Bob attended the Portland Oregon Temple regularly where they both served for many years. After her husband passed, Lucille sold their home and moved to Hermiston in 2004 where she lived with her daughter Julie until her death.

She is survived by Julie Hatch of Hermiston, Steve and Teddie Hodges of The Dalles; Bruce and Carmen Hodges of West Valley, Utah; 17 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; her daughter, Brenda Meinig and her son, Scott Hodges.

Graveside service will be held at IOOF 3 Mile Cemetery in The Dalles, OR August 4, 2022. Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral home is in care of arrangements.

Obituary: Dana Michelle (Pope) Clark, The Dalles

Dana Michelle (Pope) Clark

On Saturday, July 9th, 2022, Dana Michelle (Pope) Clark, loving wife and mother, sister, niece, cousin, and friend passed away. 

Dana was born on June 19, 1967, at Camp Pendleton, California to LaVerna (Johnson) Cormier and Jimmy “Doc” Pope. Dana was raised primarily in Anaheim, CA, also living in Mt. Vernon, OR before moving to Spokane, WA, where she eventually met the love of her life, Jeff “Bear” Clark. Dana and Bear were married on 11/11/11.

Dana was always caring for others. She was known to open her home to those in need, whether it was one of her children's friends or someone she met at work. Her intuition as to knowing the words of advice or support that others needed was uncanny.

Dana was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her husband Bear, sister Jennifer “Jenny” Pope, and her three children, Madora (Pope) Linker, Micah Phillips, and Josiah Phillips. She also has four grandchildren, the love for which prompted her move to The Dalles, OR: Kaedyn, Amery, Owen, and Emmett.

Dana’s Celebration of Life will be held on July 30, 2022, at The Dalles Moose Lodge, 233 E 3rd St, The Dalles, OR 97058, at 1:00 pm.

Obituary: Clifford (Cliff) Sumio Nakamura, Hood River

Clifford (Cliff) Sumio Nakamura died on July 15, 2022, at Providence Brookside in Hood River, Oregon, at age 94. Cliff was born on September 14, 1927, in Hood River, to Hitoshi (Henry) and Misuyo Nakamura. 

He grew up on the Nakamura family orchard in the Hood River Valley. His education was interrupted during World War II when the U.S. government sent him and his family to the Pinedale Assembly Center in California and Tule Lake, California.  

Early in 1943, Cliff’s dad found work in Emmett, Idaho, where the rest of his family joined him in May. During the summer of 1943, the family moved to Ontario, Oregon, then back to the Hood River Valley to the family orchard in September 1945. 

After graduating from Odell High School, Cliff enlisted in the army and served until February 1948, when he received an honorable discharge. He will be one of the many Nisei soldiers honored at the Oregon Nisei Veterans WWII Memorial Highway dedication on August 13, 2022. 

After serving in the army, Cliff went to Washington State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in horticulture. He then went back to help with the family orchard. 

He met his future wife, Akiko (Aki) Imai, on a date set up by his best friend and future brother-in-law, George Imai, on December 31, 1953. Cliff and Aki were married on March 12, 1955. 

Cliff was an excellent orchardist, growing high-quality cherries and pears. He and his brother, George, sold as many as 10,000 fruit trees in one year for Carlton Nursery and C&O Nursery. They discovered a new variety of apples, which they named Classic, and received royalties on it for many years. 

In addition to his orchard work, Cliff was active in the local VFW and served on the board of directors for Diamond Fruit Growers. Cliff loved fishing, bowling, hunting for matsutake mushrooms, bird hunting, and digging for razor clams. He followed and invested in the stock market and read financials avidly. Cliff was also fond of golfing and very proud of his hole-in-one on the second hole at the Hood River golf course on August 3, 1986. He experienced the joy of traveling with Aki and their friends as they explored Europe, Japan, Australia, Mexico, and many places in the U.S. 

He was preceded in death by his wife Aki, his older brother Terushi, younger brother George, older sisters Tomiko and Edith, and his daughters Christy Nakamura and Arlene Schlosser. Cliff is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Asai, her husband Carl, and their children, Jennifer Klink and Stephen Asai; his son Brian and his wife Marla; his daughter Arlene’s children, Rachel Baumgartner and Anna Schlosser; great-grandson Martin Baumgartner; and several nieces and nephews. 

He was a good man, a loving husband and father, and he will be missed. 

Services to honor Cliff are as follows; 

 A time of viewing where friends can greet with family will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Friday, August 5th at Anderson's Tribute Center
