38-year-old motorcyclist killed near The Dalles on I-84
The Dalles, Ore., April 15, 2026 — A motorcyclist was killed Tuesday after striking a stationary Oregon Department of Transportation vehicle on Interstate 84 near The Dalles, authorities said.
Oregon State Police said the crash occurred April 14 at 11:51 a.m. near milepost 87.
A preliminary investigation found an ODOT attenuator vehicle*, operated by Tristan David Service, 42, of The Dalles, was stopped in the left lane as part of a mobile brooming operation sweeping the center median. The vehicle was positioned as a safety barrier for a sweeper ahead when it was struck from behind by a black Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
The motorcyclist, identified as Ryan Christopher King, 38, of West Richland, Washington, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Service was not injured, police said.
The Wasco County Sheriff’s Office, The Dalles Police Department, Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue, and ODOT assisted at the scene.
An attenuator vehicle is a specialized safety truck equipped with a large, shock-absorbing device on the rear, designed to protect road crews and motorists by absorbing kinetic energy during high-speed rear-end collisions in work zones.
