Alonzo Garbanzo lights up Bargeway Pub tonight in TD; check the score; we got more

Entertainment Weekly sponsored by The Bargeway Pub & Catering

This week at the Bargeway

Alonzo Garbonzo hits the stage tonight, May 3 at the Bargeway Pub.

By Jim Drake

Alonzo Garbanzo will bring a host of cover tunes as well as his own original music to The Bargeway Pub on May 3 from 6 to 9 p.m. We suggest an RPM and the parmesan encrusted chicken. Or keep it light with a couple of oyster shooters. The guitarist ranges from Radiohead to Chubby Checker, and he can throw some Dylan and Milli Vanilli into the mix. Weather could not be better for a song and an adult beverage along the mighty Columbia. Word has it we may be in for little lightnin’ like those fingers on that fretboard.

Also this week at the Bargeway:

Thursday, May 4, Al Hare, 6-9 p.m.

Saturday, May 6, BB Lake Band, 1-4 p.m.

Saturday, May 6, Rich & Blonde, 6:30-9:30 p.m.

Sunday, May 7, BB Lake Band, 1-4 p.m.

Sunday, May 7, Reddy Black Trio, 6-9 p.m.

The Bargeway Pub sits along the edge of the Columbia with a full outdoor stage with chairs and tables nestled in the grass and along the patio.

Sam Miller can tell some wild tales, almost as wild as that hair.

"Less of a trio and more of a triple-headed hydra roving through an alluring array of genre-blending styles, The Colin Trio is anything but typical. Named after lead singer, guitarist, keyboardist, Colin Hogan, listeners would be hard-pressed to name any specific member of the trio as the leader. Whether it’s Colin‘s knack for slipping in and out of musical eras with ease, or bassist Brian Link’s adeptness with any groove, or drummer Cheo Larcombe’s ability to start at the flick of a match, watching The Colin Trio perform live is akin to three improvisational masters besting one another at every turn between a cavalcade of Rock, Soul, Jazz, Funk, and the Blues.”

About the concert

As most people know, jazz is one of America’s most original and important genres of music. Without jazz, there wouldn’t be later forms of popular music like rock, funk and rhythm and blues. Jazz is the foundation for all of them.

Of course, jazz is the name for a dizzying array of musical styles, beginning in the late 19th century. Ragtime, blues, Dixieland and swing are just a few types of music under the broad category of jazz.

Like America itself, the musical elements of jazz are very much a melting pot of African and European styles and techniques. Another, later, influence on jazz was the music of Central and South America – specifically Brazil. Historians and lovers of jazz call this form of jazz, “Afro-Cuban,” because it reflects its Black roots mixed with the dance rhythms of the Caribbean and South America.

To honor this style, and some of the great Latin composers and arrangers, the CGOA Jazz Collective Big Band and director Michael Paul present “The Afro-Cuban Fusion,” two concerts on May 19 and 21. The concerts will include big band arrangements by jazz giants like Chick Corea, Paquito d'Rivera and many more. If dance rhythms like mambo, cha cha and tango make you want to move, this is the concert for you. Afro-Cuban music is high energy, passionate and exciting.
