"Less of a trio and more of a triple-headed hydra roving through an alluring array of genre-blending styles, The Colin Trio is anything but typical. Named after lead singer, guitarist, keyboardist, Colin Hogan, listeners would be hard-pressed to name any specific member of the trio as the leader. Whether it’s Colin‘s knack for slipping in and out of musical eras with ease, or bassist Brian Link’s adeptness with any groove, or drummer Cheo Larcombe’s ability to start at the flick of a match, watching The Colin Trio perform live is akin to three improvisational masters besting one another at every turn between a cavalcade of Rock, Soul, Jazz, Funk, and the Blues.”

About the concert
As most people know, jazz is one of America’s most original and important genres of music. Without jazz, there wouldn’t be later forms of popular music like rock, funk and rhythm and blues. Jazz is the foundation for all of them.
Of course, jazz is the name for a dizzying array of musical styles, beginning in the late 19th century. Ragtime, blues, Dixieland and swing are just a few types of music under the broad category of jazz.
Like America itself, the musical elements of jazz are very much a melting pot of African and European styles and techniques. Another, later, influence on jazz was the music of Central and South America – specifically Brazil. Historians and lovers of jazz call this form of jazz, “Afro-Cuban,” because it reflects its Black roots mixed with the dance rhythms of the Caribbean and South America.
To honor this style, and some of the great Latin composers and arrangers, the CGOA Jazz Collective Big Band and director Michael Paul present “The Afro-Cuban Fusion,” two concerts on May 19 and 21. The concerts will include big band arrangements by jazz giants like Chick Corea, Paquito d'Rivera and many more. If dance rhythms like mambo, cha cha and tango make you want to move, this is the concert for you. Afro-Cuban music is high energy, passionate and exciting.

*Little Shop Horrors show update:
Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association announces one more performance for "Little Shop of Horrors," for Sunday, May 14, at 2 p.m. at the Hood River Valley High School’s Bowe Theater.
About the Show
The Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association is proud to present the musical sensation “Little Shop of Horrors,” directed by Joe Garoutte, with music direction by Dan Kenealy. Based on a cult sci-fi film from 1960, this “strange and unusual” musical is filled with fun and unforgettable tunes.
“Little Shop of Horrors” tells the story of Seymour, a down-on-his-luck florist, who raises a mysterious, possibly extraterrestrial, blood-thirsty plant that promises him fame, fortune and love…but at a cost. With infectious music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman, this beloved musical is sure to entertain audiences of all ages. The musical was made into a smash hit movie in 1986, directed by Frank Oz, with a cameo by Steve Martin as a sadistic dentist. A staple of school, community and professional theaters, “Little Shop of Horrors” was recently revived off-Broadway, starring “Hamilton’s” Jonathan Groff.
Joe Garoutte and Dan Kenealy, the directorial team that brought you last year’s sold-out production of RENT, guide the talented cast of actors as they bring this dark comedy to life in a whole new way. The show promises to be a feast for the eyes and ears, filled with powerful vocals and a catchy pop score. While there’s more than a nod to the dark warnings that lie within, there are also plenty of laughs to lull you just enough to become plant food if you’re not careful.
