BINGEN TURNS 100! Celebration April 13
By Ken Park
Bingen, WA, April 10, 2024 – Mark your calendars! The community is invited to celebrate the City of Bingen’s centennial on Saturday, April 13. That's right, it's time to say Happy 100th Birthday to Bingen!
Although Theodore Suksdorf founded the City of Bingen in 1892 and named it after the German town of Bingen-on-the-Rhine, it wasn't until April 18, 1924, that the town officially became incorporated.
The festivities kick off at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Society Hotel with Coffee and Cocoa and a welcome from Bingen Mayor Catherine Kiewitt before it's time for the big reveal of the Bingen Time capsule. According to City Administrator Krista Loney, the Bingen Public Works Department unearthed the original time capsule; however, the contents had aged to such an extent that they proved challenging to identify.
“We are working with the Gorge Heritage Museum to see if we can get a list of what was in there,” Loney said in an email.
City officials will collect ideas during the festivities on what to put in another time capsule that will be buried sometime this year. After the time capsule reveal, festivalgoers can enjoy a donut-eating contest.
Celebrators are also invited to visit local businesses from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. to collect stamps for their “passport” to earn prizes upon returning the passport to The Society Hotel.
Participating businesses include Beneventi’s Pizza, Mugs Coffee, Sinclair Fuel Stop, Antiques & Oddities, Chips Bar and Grill, Gorge Heritage Museum, Margie’s Outdoor Store, and many more.
After visitors turn in their “passports” they can head to Daubenspeck Park for more festivities including a cake cutting for Bingen’s 100th birthday, a live DJ, food trucks, and much more from 4 p.m.-7 p.m.
