The Dalles, Ore., April 11, 2024 — Donnie Lewis was hitting the streets today with his three dogs Schroeder, Charlie Brown and Peppermint Patty in the hunt for shopping carts.
The 75-year-old of The Dalles said it’s good work to keep him moving and busy as he continues to recover from nerve damage he received in a beating during a burglary that came close to taking his life on Jan. 22, 2021.
Lewis provided photos and detailed the events of that night noting he used a knife to cut Zip Ties that were used by the three men who kidnapped him, tied him up and then left him in his house.
The men stole a safe containing $150,000, jewelry and military medals from Lewis during the burglary.
Lewis said it amounted to his life savings from working at Jones Auto Wrecking and Wasco County.
On the brighter side, he said he and a high school student Isaac Johnson who was working on his community hours wrangled 4,700 carts last year for local stores.
After picking the cart up on Fourth Street, Lewis said he was headed to the Library with the new cat that he found behind Franz Bakery a few days back.
Did you name those dogs?
“No, the girls from (Mama Jane’s) Pancake House did,” he said. “You remember Peanuts, don’t you.”
