Cool Oasis lands shady award

Al and Bev Eagy are the June winners of The Dalles Beautification Award. The couple have lived in the historic Ben Snipes home and anchor an ad hoc group of Fools on Fourth Street - myself included.

218 West Fourth Street in The Dalles is looking good.

It’s always looking good.

The Dalles Beatification Committee agrees, awarding Al and Bev Eagy the Beautification Award for June 2024. It’s a shady award for all the right reasons.

Al and Bev have worked tirelessly over the years to improve this Colonial Revival house built by Cattle King Ben Snipes in 1867.

The two-story home flanked by gorgeous birch trees sports some of the largest Rhododendrons in The Dalles. Hydrangea and roses and astute detail to ground cover make this home a shaded, cool oasis, especially during warm summer days when you can often find Bev and Al on the front porch talking with friends and neighbors.

There’s always a little watering and yard work to do as well. Al also chips in maintaining and protecting St. Peter’s Landmark.

The couple also take great pride in maintaining and hosting people at the Victor Trevitt House which they rescued from City Park and restored and now operate as an Airbnb. It is right next door to them.

And what about this fool thing?

That’s just a little fun Bev and Al like to throw around as people work to improve Fourth Street: The Fools of Fourth Street.

Victor Johnson a few years back said he used to be the Mayor after buying the Herbring House, but he wondered if some other knucklehead should be wearing the crown - someone on Fourth foolish enough to take a loan on a building and start an electronic newspaper at the start of the pandemic.
