The Dalles, Ore., Oct. 12, 2026 — What will replace Shari’s Cafe & Pies in The Dalles?

Locals have been wondering for months as the building went dark across the street from Safeway last October.

There is some new light in the story.

The building has a new owner, and clues point toward a possible Chinese restaurant, but the answer remains a mystery.

The former Shari’s property on West Sixth Street sold for $720,000, according to Wasco County property records.

Facebook information indicates a Chinese restaurant may be planned for the site, and the buyers have a history of operating Chinese restaurants.

However, CCCNews has not confirmed those plans and is working to contact the new owners, Anna Chi and Jason Zhu, for more information.

Roseburg resident Dena Young of CDY LLC owned the building and leased to Shari’s. She said on Saturday the property was an investment for her and her partner, who operate several Les Schwab tire stores in southern Oregon.

Young said the sale closed about 45 days ago and that finding a buyer had taken roughly a year.

“We just did it,” Young said, explaining that the investment had seemed like a good deal. She said she and her partners had taken excess funds and invested in commercial buildings, of which they own several.

The sale was recorded Aug. 31, with the deed filed Oct. 2, according to county records.

The $720,000 price was considerably below the property’s previous recorded sale. The building sold for $1.9 million in 2022 and $1.8 million in 2008. An earlier 2008 transaction was recorded at $740,000.

China Wok in Sunnyside, Wash.

The buyers’ names and Sunnyside, Washington, address match information of Jason Zhu’s restaurant business, China Wok in that community.

The Sunnyside Sun newspaper report described Zhu as the owner of China Wok, a restaurant serving Szechuan, Cantonese and Mandarin dishes. The report also said Zhu had previously opened two restaurants in Oregon.

That background makes a restaurant a plausible next chapter for the former Shari’s building, but it does not establish what the couple intends exactly.

CCCNews will update this story when the new owners can be reached and provide more information about the building’s future.
