“We’re looking forward to a busy entertainment schedule this spring,” Steve said on Tuesday, Feb. 25. “We’ll start peeling off the wrapping paper pretty soon and let everybody in on it.”

He offered up his 4-Day St. Paddy’s Day celebration news below as a little taste of things to come and he also pointed out that Bargeway will soon be changing up the Penny Pincher lunch specials in early March. So look out for those affordable delectables.

Movie Night: SAFETY LAST

(Silent Movie with a performance by Matt Neill on Organ)

SAFETY LAST is a 1923 American silent romantic-comedy film starring Harold Lloyd. It includes one of the most famous images from the silent-film era: Lloyd clutching the hands of a large clock as he dangles from the outside of a skyscraper above moving traffic. The film was highly successful and critically hailed, and it cemented Lloyd's status as a major figure in early motion pictures. It is still popular at revivals, and it is viewed today as one of the great film comedies.

Show Opening Party and Artist Talk: "Unyielding" by Kat Carroll

Join us for an evening of live music, snacks, unique art and an interview with the artist at the opening party for Kat Carroll's first solo exhibit.

"Unyielding" by Kat Carroll

About The Event

In “Unyielding,” Kat invites viewers to reflect on the transformative power of art and the journey of self-exploration. Her artist statement resonates throughout the exhibit: “The pieces represented in ‘Unyielding’ are influenced by the idea of women listening to their inner voice, stepping out of their comfort zones to gain growth and power, and discovering their imagination that has been beat down by ‘growing up.’” This theme is vividly illustrated through mixed media installations that juxtapose delicate botanicals with bold geometric patterns, symbolizing the balance between fragility and strength.

Be on the lookout for a special surprise installation at the opening! This hidden gem promises to add an exciting element to your experience. Don't miss it!

Tickets are $20 or $25 at the door.

The evolution of Boot Juice has been a magnificent phenomenon to behold over the past few years. This seven-piece band from Davis has done things the old-fashioned way – earning everything they have with blood, sweat and tears shed on stages throughout the region. It’s been more sweat than anything else based on the practically inhuman volume of energy output they generate throughout the course of their relentless performances.

Boot Juice defies the typical assumption that a big band with horns is sticking to the well-worn path of funk and jazz. They certainly infuse those genres into the mix. More than anything though, this is an unabashed cosmic rock band intent on taking audiences into an alternate dimension of pure freedom and dance euphoria where the outside world ceases to exist. Their three-part vocal harmonies carry major impact with intoxicating doses of soul, blues and sultry appeal. The passionate musicianship and group synergy resonates in their pure sense of joy. Drawing favorable comparisons to the sound of The California Honey Drops and the spirit of the Talking Heads, you’ll have no doubt that the refreshing originality of Boot Juice always has a firm grip on the wheel.

A trio featuring Mike Dillon (Les Claypool, Ani DiFranco, Rickie Lee Jones) on vibraphone, marimba, Prophet 6, congas, and bongos, Brian Haas (Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey) on Fender Rhodes, piano, bass Moog and melodica and Nikki Glaspie (Beyonce, Nth Power) on drums, cymbals and vocals, Punkadelick is the unified vision of six hands creating a world that often sounds like the work of an ensemble three times the size.

During 2020 and 2021, while many music venues were still shuttered, the group began touring, sweating their way through cuts Dillon and Haas had composed during quarantine writing sessions. Locking in on stage, it quickly became clear the band was functioning at a level that made the hair on their arms stand at attention—even for three live music veterans accustomed to life on the road.

Portland's #1 Soul Brother returns to The Ruins!

Walking through the residential heart of Portland’s Mississippi district you’ll find a charming wooden house under the overcast Oregon sky. This local landmark is the home of soul legend Ural Thomas, built by hand with found materials decades ago. The basement is overflowing with musical equipment. When you walk down into the room you may see Portland’s Soul Brother Number One at the table chuckling, telling stories and jokes, and espousing his personal humanist philosophy obtained from 82 years of unfathomable experiences. He’s often joined by either his generations of biological posterity or the adopted family, which is his band, The Pain. You may also find this infinitely magnetic personality ripping through a cover song at full volume or working out a new original with his loved ones. Though Ural Thomas is widely recognized as one of the most exciting singers remaining from the original soul era, and an active musical institution for over 60 years, his band, all decades younger, are treated as equals. The Pain is no backing band, but rather a well-oiled tightly-knit musical aggregation that’s spent the last eight years with Thomas developing a unique sound of its own.

Yak Attack & Cytrus

Yak Attack & Cytrus

Saturday, March 22, 7-10:30 p.m.

Doors at 6:30 p.m. Indoor venue. All-ages.

Tickets are $15 in advance (click here,) or $20 at the door.

Yak Attack is a live electronic power trio. The band's music spans a wide variety of electronic genres (house, trance, breakbeat, drum, and bass) and mixes in elements of many other genres such as jazz, funk, and psych. Founded in 2013, Yak Attack has gained recognition nationwide for virtuosic playing, a unique setup of live instruments and live looping with no pre-recorded samples or backing tracks, and compelling live performances featuring lush soundscapes, dynamic improvisation, and DJ-like transitions in continuous sets. The band has toured with an impressive array of national acts, thrown successful afterparties for many bands in numerous states, and has developed a passionate fanbase through its songwriting strength, extensive market history and festival appearances, live show recordings, and curation of an ecstatic, uplifting musical experience.

In the world of music, the term “fusion” tends to raise eyebrows. Yet, the sonic explorers of Seattle octuplet Cytrus have spent the last three years crafting a debut that draws deftly from a broad melodic palette, melding distinct stylistic threads into a cohesive creative voice. Relax, and the grooves will flow through your soul. Concentrate, and you’ll find yourself tumbling through an immaculately constructed alternate reality when melody and rhythm dance hand in hand through spacetime.

Queer Shorts

Columbia Arts presents a collection of short films at the intersection of queer identity and the outdoors. From rivers to forests, open roads to surreal landscapes, these stories explore mentorship, self-identity and reinvention, and the natural world: canoe-making becomes a vessel for healing, a carabiner holds history beyond climbing, and a tin man in the woods grapples with identity and what remains after loss... From the Canyons of Utah to the cruising spots of Oregon, these films share a range of queer stories, primarily from PNW filmmakers.

Obsessed with Light

Saturday, March 1, 6:15 p.m.

Film: Columbia Arts & Maryhill Museum of Art Present

Obsessed with Light

An exciting and visually stunning documentary film about modern dance pioneer and co-founder of the Maryhill Museum, Loie Fuller. An exclusive recorded Q&A with the filmmakers will follow the screening. Obsessed with Light is a meditation on light and the enduring obsession to create. The film pulls back the curtain on Loïe Fuller, a wildly original performer who revolutionized the visual culture of the early 20th century. But it is not a bio-pic. Creating a dialogue between the past and the present, the documentary delves into the astonishing influence Fuller’s work has on contemporary culture including artists like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Taylor Swift, Bill T. Jones, Shakira and William Kentridge, among many others. In the process, the film uncovers commonalities that connect these creative luminaries to Fuller and each other.

Beyond the Scrub: New Attention on Oregon White Oaks and Why They Matter with Lindsay Cornelius of Columbia Land Trust

https://givebutter.com/oregon-white-oaks-and-why-they-matter

Oregon white oak trees seem abundant, almost weedy in the gorge. They are the least showy of our native hardwoods and often look as though they are falling apart. So why in 2020 did a diverse group of stakeholders, band together for a closer look at these native trees? Why are oaks being called a lifeboat? A safe-zone for species trying to survive the subtle (and not so subtle) changes that are accompanying our changing climate? And how might new efforts to conserve and restore oak woodlands in the Gorge impact our landscapes, people, and even economy? Join Lindsay Cornelius, Manager of the East Cascades Oak Partnership, to learn why oaks make such excellent neighbors in a place prone to drought, fires, heat, and wind. And explore how these sometimes decrepit-looking trees are actually supporting vibrant life – more so than any other tree species in the Gorge.

About the concerts

From the profound romanticism of Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet, to Dvorak’s lyrical 8th Symphony to Prokofiev’s quirky and playful music for the movies, the Gorge Sinfonietta’s “Slavic Fantasy” concert has something for every music lover. Focused on composers from 19th century Russia and eastern Europe, the concert is heavy on melody, beauty and audience appeal.

Slavic Fantasy concert

Tchaikovsky’s Fantasy Overture on Romeo and Juliet was drafted when the composer was only 29, but the final version appeared ten years later. Highlighting some of the incidents and characters in Shakespeare’s drama, Tchaikovsky’s portrait contains what’s probably the single most recognizable love theme in all of classical music. Conductor Mark Steighner said “You could call it ‘radical Romanticism.’ That theme is over-the-top emotional, but we forget how striking it was at the time.”

Antonin Dvorak is best known for his New World Symphony, but that work’s immediate predecessor is even more tuneful and uplifting. “Dvorak’s 8th Symphony is by turns Romantic, dance-like, simple like a folk song and as exciting as a film score from Hollywood,” Steighner said. “It goes through many moods, but it’s always beautiful and easy to enjoy.”

The final selection on the Slavic Fantasy program is a suite by 20th century composer Sergei Prokofiev. “We don’t often think of composers like Prokofiev writing movie music, but many of them did.” His Lt. Kije Suite is a selection of music written for a 1934 film, a comic satire about Czarist Russia, with a lot of slapstick comedy and absurdity. Like the film, the music is playful and almost never serious. “I think my favorite section is the final movement,” Steighner said, “when Kije is dying and his life flashes before his eyes, represented by all the different themes sort of colliding in his head.”

The Slavic Fantasy concert is one of three programs presented by the Gorge Sinfonietta this season. The final concert, called “Vacation Time: Postcards from a Musical Journey” will be in June.

Marty O’Reilly

Thursday, March 6, Marty O’Reilly (solo) / Kyle J. Glenn, Cathartic, genre-bending Folk, $15 Advance // $18 Day Of Show, 6 p.m. Doors / 7 p.m. Show, All Ages

MARTY O'REILLY

Explaining Marty O’Reilly’s music is like describing a dream. It feels familiar, but at the same time unchartered. His songs sound bluesy but not blues, folk but not folk, soulful but not soul. Marty’s voice is beautiful and unique, his lyrics stark yet lush over gritty electrified guitar, melding beautifully into genre-defying music within the vast definitions of Americana. One can hear an urgency and complexity in the songs, expressing something elemental and perhaps contradictory: love and anger, joy and pain, real and imagined.

KYLE J. GLENN

Kyle J. Glenn (he/him) is a singer-songwriter from Portland, Oregon, who has been writing and performing his own songs since 2014. His music blends folk rock, alt-country, and singer-songwriter traditions, and his latest record, “Everywhere is Close to Somewhere Else”, reflects a decade-long journey to find "home."

Casey Neill

Saturday, March 8, Casey Neill & The Norway Rats, Folk, art-rock, atmospheric soundscapes, dreamy ballads and guitar freak-outs, $15 Advance // $15 Day Of Show, 6 p.m. Doors / 7 p.m. Show, All Ages

CASEY NEILL & THE NORWAY RATS

Sending Up Flares, the fourth record from Casey Neill & The Norway Rats, is the sound of a band rallying together, turning the genre-bending range of its influences into the group’s most cohesive, cathartic album yet. Created amidst chaos and uncertainty, these songs offer a lifeline to a world in need of balance, shot through with stories about resolve, resilience, wonder, and positive human interaction. The music of Casey Neill & The Norway Rats combines dreamy ballads and high energy rave-ups built around narrative songwriting. Neill tours with the band and solo throughout the USA, Japan, and Europe having performed at venues such as Town Hall in New York, Bumbershoot, and the Newport Folk Festival.

Kathryn Claire

Friday, March 14, Lincoln Crockett & John Depew / Kathryn Claire, Heady and Heartfelt Modern American Mandolin Multi-Instrumentalists, $15 Advance // $15 Day Of Show, 6 p.m. Doors / 7 p.m. Show, All Ages

Lincoln Crockett is a versatile multi-instrumentalist and songwriter based in Trout Lake, WA, known for his modern folk and progressive bluegrass. With masterful mandolin and guitar skills, his music blends rich chords, earthy rhythms, and a wry spiritual flavor.

John Depew hails from the wide-open prairie, where there are more cows than people—and he likes it that way. Nominated for the “Mt. Rushmore of Awkward Kansans,” he embraces his role with pride, preferring medium- to large-scale conversations and definitely never overthinking things like how many potatoes to cook for dinner. His songwriting and musicianship have been described as “a nightmare for your ears… like… in a good way!” Depew’s skills on mandolin, octave mandolin, guitar, and banjo are as exceptional as his sense of humor, earning him the title of Kansas State Mandolin Champion for 2022. His latest album, Bell of Hope, showcases his top-shelf songwriting, musicianship, and vocals.

Kathryn Claire with Sid Ditson

With her violin and voice at the center of her music, Kathryn Claire weaves together stories and melodies rooted in her classical and traditional musical background while infusing each song and composition with an energy and electricity that is palpable. If you have seen her live, you know her musicality and joy on stage is infectious.

Monster ‘n Me Tour

Saturday, March 15, “Monster ‘n Me Tour” featuring Wes Watkins & Carrie Jennings, Folk, 1960s Soul, Jazz, and Americana, $15 Advance // $15 Day Of Show, 6 p.m. Doors / 7 p.m. Show, All Ages

We all grow up wondering about the monster under the bed, the shadow in the window, or the skeletons in the closet. Are they friends or foes? Are they always there, or is there some transdimensional portal to their home nearby? Do they have families? Do they sing, dance, and cry like us? Are they here to hurt us? And maybe, most importantly: Am I the monster? This March, Wes & Carrie embark on a journey with a shared quartet to explore these questions through song, story, and connection. Featuring their dual trumpet talents, they deliver a soundscape that blends Folk, 1960s Soul, Jazz, and Americana, offering a rich and evocative musical journey.

Friday, March 21, Damien Jurado performing “Saint Bartlett,” PNW Indie Folk master plays his landmark 9th album, $25 Advance // $30 Day Of Show, 6 p.m. Doors / 7 p.m. Show, All Ages

DAMIEN JURADO

Performing his 2010 ninth record, Saint Bartlett. This record, released by Secretly Canadian, was the first of 4 records that Damien had collaborated with the late PNW indie luminary Richard Swift (The Shins, The Black Keys, Nathaniel Rateliff). Pitchfork said in it's review upon release, "Produced by the increasingly ubiquitous Richard Swift, Saint Bartlett, Jurado's ninth record is, finally, a striking departure" and  "The songs on Saint Bartlett would be considered an achievement for any artist-- but the fact that they come 13 years into a career makes the album even more of a triumph". Now 15 years old, Saint Bartlett stands as a landmark in the Indie Folk genre that gets better and better every time you listen to it.

True Loves

Thursday, March 27, True Loves, A night of groovy funk soulful dance music, $20 Advance // $25 Day Of Show, 6 p.m. Doors / 7 p.m. Show, 21+

TRUE LOVES

Listening to the Seattle-based original funk & soul group, True Loves, is like walking down a favorite neighborhood street, slapping-five with friends, checking up with clerks in their stores, and smelling the familiar scents of your most cherished locale. The band is it’s own block party. What began in 2014 as a jam session between three of the city’s best- drummer David McGraw, bassist Bryant Moore and guitarist Jimmy James- has since blossomed into a global force that features percussionist Iván Galvez, Trombonist Greg Kramer, and saxophonists Gordon Brown and Skerik. Together, the group’s live performances have garnered them much acclaim and millions of streams on YouTube. In 2017, the True Loves recorded their debut instrumental LP, Famous Last Words, which received worldwide adoration, earning them spots at coveted music festivals. In 2018, the group released the “Dapper Derp/Kabuki” 45” on WeCoast Records followed by 2019’s Colemine Records “Famous Last Words/Mary Pop Poppins” 45 single. The band released their sophomore album “Sunday Afternoon” in 2021, on Color Red Music.

Lilly Hiatt

Saturday, March 29, Lilly Hiatt / Phillip-Michael Scales, Alt-Rock blends with singer/songwriter sensitivity, $15 Advance // $18 Day Of Show, 6 p.m. Doors / 7 p.m. Show, All Ages

LILLY HIATT

The last few years have been a little hazy for Lilly Hiatt, who finds herself searching for answers on her striking new album, Forever. Recorded at home with her husband, Coley Hinson, who produced and played most of the instruments, Forever grapples with growth and change, escape and anxiety, self-loathing and self-love. The songs are intensely vulnerable, full of diaristic snapshots and deeply personal ruminations, but they’re also broad invitations to find yourself in their unflinching emotional excavations. The result is a raw, unvarnished work of love and trust that walks the line between alt-rock muscle and singer/songwriter sensitivity, a bold, guitar-driven exploration of maturity and adulthood from an artist who wants you to know you’re not alone, no matter how lost you may feel.

PHILLIP-MICHAEL SCALES

Phillip-Michael was born in Michigan, forged in Chicago, and now lives in Nashville, TN. He grew up with B.B. King calling him “nephew” and calls his music "Dive Bar Soul,"  a blend of Indie Rock storytelling and the passion of the blues. In February of 2022, he caught the attention of Ellen Degeneres who featured him on her show. In June of 2024 he spent a month supporting Legendary Songwriter Keb’ Mo’ on tour.

Jake Xerxes Fussell

Sunday, March 30, Jake Xerxes Fussell, Folk inspired singer, guitarist, and composer based in Durham, NC., $18 Advance // $20 Day Of Show, 6 p.m. Doors / 7 p.m. Show, All Ages

JAKE XERXES FUSSELL

Jake Xerxes Fussell is a singer, guitarist, and composer based in Durham, NC. His intuitive creative process often draws from traditional music and archival field recordings-incorporating elements of songs from the past into new work. He is, according to Ann Powers of NPR, "may be the leading interpreter of American folk music right now..."

Fussell’s most recent album “When I’m Called,” was released to critical acclaim by Fat Possum Records in the summer of 2024. The album was produced by James Elkington and features Blake Mills (guitars), Ben Whiteley (bass), and Joe Westerlund (drums), along with additional vocals from Joan Shelley and Robin Holcomb.

Fussell and Elkington also wrote and recorded the music for “Rebuilding,” a new feature film directed by Max Walker-Silverman that is set to premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.

“Fussell’s music often comes with complex citations; he is a folk singer in the truest sense, collecting ideas and melodies and lyrics from distant and disparate traditions, looking for the things that unite us in our humanity.”-The New Yorker

“(Fussell) is one of the great magpies of American song, collecting forgotten, tarnished gems with a folklorist’s zeal... his renditions aren’t so much cover versions as composites...”–The Guardian
