Little Art City strikes again: von Borstel mural dives deep into farming history

Little Art City strikes again: von Borstel mural dives deep into farming history

Pete McKearnan, 67 of Portland works on an International 1480 the latest combine to harvest the von Borstel wheat.

The Dalles, Ore., Sept. 25, 2023 - Mural artists from three different states converged on The Dalles this morning as they are bringing another lively piece of art into being on a downtown building.

Christine DeShazo who was the designer and lead on the Sorosis Club Mural on Oliver’s Flooring Building on Fourth Street.

She said Wayne Von Borstel, of von Borstel & associated, approached her about doing a farm mural about his family which incorporates 11 different combines dating back to the early 1900s. She started the design work back in January and now she and her friends are at the culmination of her efforts - bringing the lively piece to life on the side of Wayne’s buliding at 308 E. Third Street.

She is getting a lot of help from friends and family. They expect to be working all week - so go on down and check it out and cheer them on.

Here is the original work that Christine created which is now being painted on the von Borstel building. Click to enlarge.

While helping other artists with paint colors and providing direction, Christine DeShazo of Murphysboro, Illinois, works on the back of Wayne von Borstel where he is depicted walking into the history of his family farm and ranch.

Julie Nelson, also of Murphysboro, puts some fine work on the grain that adorns the von Borstel name.

Joy Kjer of Lincoln, Nebraska refers to some old photographs to ensure the mural’s depiction is accurate.

TEASER - another mural is also in the works for downtown The Dalles, said Karl Vercouteren.

Denae Manion

The local Northwest MuralFest Committee announces the design for the new mural to be painted Oct. 5-7 at The Dalles City Hall parking lot next to the Cherry mural.  Lead artists are Portland Walldog sign painter Justin Reide and local artist Denae Manion.  Manion was the lead artist for the 2022 August children’s mural on Wonderworks Museum.

Local and regional volunteer painters will help to complete the mural in the limited time frame, just as the almost 300 volunteers from around the nation and around the world did during last year’s big MuralFest.  The public is invited to watch the “walldogs” paint and tour the older murals located throughout downtown The Dalles.  There will be a dedication/celebration of the new mural on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 5 p.m.

Here is a look at the Mural to be painted in October.
