The Dalles, Ore., Oct. 3, 2023 - JJ Castro and his crew of Ramiro and Jorge were working the concrete along a new sidewalk out front of Cascade Square near Dutch Bros this morning.

They measured the concrete and cut in the contraction joints so that the sidewalk could withstand freezing weather without cracking.

Castro has been a fixture here in The Dalles improving pedestrian spaces one sidewalk at a time. His recent work also includes the new sidewalk on Third Street next to St. Peter’s Landmark.

“We try to make the city better,” he said. The crew was also greeted with some fine fall weather as the sun returned today and the outlook is outstanding - upper 70s and even some 80-degree days are expected through Sunday, Oct. 7.
