Photo of the Day: Salmon are Spawning in Mill Creek
By Cole Goodwin
The Dalles, Ore., October 3, 2023 — In today's featured photograph, a robust salmon is seen washed up on the shores of Mill Creek, a poignant reminder of the enduring spirit of these majestic creatures.
Each year, after traveling thousands of miles, salmon return to their natal rivers and streams to reproduce. Most salmon also stop eating when they return to freshwater. This in combination with using all of their energy on their trip upstream and to make eggs and a nest leaves them with no energy for a return trip to the ocean. As a result, many die of exhaustion. Their decomposing bodies then add nutrients to their native streams or are eaten by other animals.
For some, their home creek likes in the middle of downtown The Dalles. Mill Creek provides these animals with habitat necessary ensuring the continuity of their lineage. While it's not uncommon for salmon to return to their birthplaces, witnessing them in the act of spawning in local waters like Mill Creek is a sight to behold. It serves as a reminder of the importance of the health of our waterways and the delicate balance of our local ecosystem.
Residents and nature enthusiasts are encouraged to tread lightly when visiting the creek during this period. While the scene is captivating, it's crucial to ensure minimal disturbance to the salmon during this critical stage in their life cycle.
Whether you're a seasoned angler or a nature lover, this spawning season in Mill Creek offers a poignant glimpse into the tenacity and resilience of salmon. Their journey, fraught with challenges, mirrors the ebb and flow of life itself, reminding us all of nature's wondrous cycle.
