Pho-nominal: Serrato swingin' for Pho Sai Gon

Pho-nominal: Serrato swingin' for Pho Sai Gon

The Dalles, Ore., July 29, 2024 — Juan Serrato, 51, of The Dalles was wielding a big hammer Monday morning as he tore down an old booth from Tacos Del Rio at 421 Union Street.

Serrato of Serrato Construction said he was taking care of the cleanup as much of the old restaurant was dismantled and placed in the east parking lot during the recent remodel. Pho Sai Gon, a Vietnamese restaurant is set to open at the location in the near future.

Serrato was also proud to point out that his son would soon be opening an auto detail shop near Wahtonka High School.

One of our readers also had this to say about Pho Sai Gon:

“I used to go to the Pho Sai Gon restaurant often when it was still in the place that used to house Rommel’s Restaurant.  It was my favorite place to eat out at in The Dalles. Lots of people ate there.  The owners were very successful and provided good, nourishing food to the public.  When the pandemic hit things became harder and harder for the owners of Pho Sai Gon and eventually they lost their lease on the restaurant space.

After that happened, I was bereft of my good Vietnamese food.  A while later the owner’s (I only know one of the owner’s name…her name is Van) opened a food cart on 6th Street with the other food carts located there.  Still, the same great food.

I recently saw that it looks like Pho Sai Gon is fixing up the restaurant building on 4th and Union streets for a new Pho Sai Gon.

Yay!  I wish CCCNews would write a story about these folks.  They are really hard-working people and seem to have survived a very difficult time in the loss of their livelihood and restaurant…. it’s hard enough to weather all of this but when English is not your first language it is even harder.  A little feel-good story could go a long way to helping them along their path of trying to get all of this going again.  Could you do this please….maybe Tom Peterson?  Thank you, Shelly Van Riper.

Shelley, we never know what each day will bring, but we will do our best to get this covered!

Thanks for writing,

Tom Peterson
