Gorge Youth hold Climate Change Vigils
There is no Planet B.
- Greta Thunberg
By Katie Cook
A group of youth from both Oregon and Washington have joined forces with members of the Social Justice and Witness team of Riverside Community Church to build awareness about climate change.
The group has been holding vigils in front of the salmon fountain in downtown Hood River on Fridays from 4:30-5:00 for the past seven weeks and is part of a growing climate justice organization called, “Fridays for the Future.” Because the long-term sustainability of the planet is becoming more and more uncertain, growing numbers of young people across the globe are demanding action to address the crisis.
“Fridays for Future” is a worldwide organization that was initially inspired by Greta Thunberg, the well-known teen climate activist from Sweden This youth-led movement started in November of 2018 to put pressure on world leaders to take forceful action to reduce global warming.
There are currently over 7,500 cities and over 14 million people on all continents who are active supporters of this movement. The Gorge youth need your support and they are currently meeting monthly to find more ways to take action. Please contact Riverside Community Church UCC at 541- 386-1412 for more information.
