Sawing down a dream
Jill Aire, 22, of Troutdale took a turn on the cross-cut saw in Cascade Locks on Saturday, Aug. 19. She took to the rhythm pretty quickly as Carson Schmitt with the U.S. Forest Service watched the chips fly at Pacific Crest Trail Days.
Aire said using the saw was a blast. And guess what? She is going to Oregon State University next year and the college has a logging sports team. “I’m considering trying out,” she said.
Carson said the interactive display was a great way for the public to see how trail crews use hand tools where non-mechanized equipment is not allowed in the forest.
