Shannon's Trivia Winner: Huteson is #1, well, actually lucky No. 17

This dry cleaning business was located across the street from The Dalles High School tennis courts at 301 East 12th, said John Foley. The picture was taken in 1963. Permanent press became widely available in the mid-60s thus putting a strain on dry cleaning businesses.” “A Studebaker Lark and Rambler station wagon are parked in front,” said Chuck Rinck. “A Ford Falcon is in the street going downhill off to the left of the building.”

Last week this photo above brought a torrential downpour of answers as locals locked onto the fact that this commercial building now turned residential is across the street from the tennis courts at The Dalles High School. It is at 301 E. 12th Street.

23 different people responded with the correct answer and we learned a lot!

But we could only take one lick off this waffle cone of winners to determine our Shannon’s Ice Cream Queen. Our Randomizer - aka Peggy Peterson, chose the number 17 out of thin air, which correlated with…

Anne Huteson, come on down. You're our next winner in the scream for ice cream!

Huteson, we don’t have a problem. Rather a conundrum - which homemade flavor will you choose first with your $25 gift card to Shannon’s Ice Cream at 318 E. Fourth Street, The Dalles. Shannon’s Ice Cream scooping the dream daily from noon to 9 p.m. It’s across the street from the Civic Auditorium.

There were some other major wins in this puzzle as we received tons of information from locals about the unique building.

“In 2004-2005 my friend and I got kicked out of Spanish class for talking too much, and needed to go to a different class. The only “fun” option was to do a daycare class. This daycare was located in this building!,” said Danyell Beyer. “I have no clue its history before that!”

“I was surprised today when I saw this building in the news,” said Jayne Guidinger. My husband and I owned this building for several years. It is currently owned by our friend Rick Martinson. It's rented as two separate apartments. When we owned it in the 2000s, our son and his family lived there. Prior to our ownership, it was a childcare place for high school and CGCC students. In 1990 when we bought our house next door, it was two single apartments.”

“It once was a restaurant when I was in high school,” said Robert Thouvenel. “Later it was used for unwed mothers to bring their children to while they attended high school. Annette Hazlett was in charge of the daycare.”

“In 1954 when I arrived in The Dalles as a remarkable 7th grader this building was called the TeePee,” said David Lacock, a 1960 grad of TDHS. “It Served hamburgers and other foodstuff. At some point, it was turned into a 1-hour Martinizing (cleaners). I never paid any attention after that. You take care and keep up the excellent work.”

Thanks, David. We’ll keep cranking as long as Shannon keeps churning!

Our hats are off to all the other brainy folks who nailed this one: Terrie Dunn-Daggett, Jon Chavers, Katie Swafford, Kim Birge, Michelle Leach, Denise Ellis, JR Frakes, Dan Flatfender, Taner Elliott, Dan Patton, Jay Waterbury, Connie Greenwood, Mike Kilkenny, Mary Davis, Geneva Snow, Mike Moreno, Amanda Witherow.

One last thought - we still don’t know the architecture of this building - Does anyone care to weigh in?
