Shannon’s Trivia Winner: Market Mayhem goes fishing

The Dalles, Ore., Sept. 3, 2024 — Puzzlers this week stuffed the shopping cart full when it came to this historic photo of the well-known market that operated in downtown The Dalles for decades.
We had 24 responders with correct or almost-correct answers. So we gave credit for spelling this week and those who came up with the exact name, of which there were 9, were entered into the raffle.
Our randomizer, Joshuah Albert, spit out the number 6, when barked at with a demand for a number between 1 and 9.
Theresa Carlson was our lucky winner with her answer “Maiers Market.”
And before you ask, ‘Hey, where’s the apostrophe,’ we note the original sign did not contain one.
So… Good to go Theresa.
We also want to point out that a good number of our puzzlers were so close - sending in the answer Meier’s instead of Maier’s. To them, we tip our hat.
As a journalist with a homonym issue, I feel your pain.
And, we also point out that people hammered the fact that Curtis Homer Baker was the next owner of Maier’s Market.
To a greater and lesser degree, everyone responding got the question right.
However those that hit the nail on the head with both Maier’s and Homer Baker were Jack LaFond, Diana Compton, Mary Davis, Robert Thouvenel, Dale Klindt, Gary Hertel, Kim Birge, and Michael Ballinger.
More on the Market with John Foley
Harold Maier’s first location, above, was in front of the old Brewery. Mareta Maier, Harold's daughter-in-law, thinks this picture was taken around 1918.
The next location, above, was across the street from Optimist Printers on East 3rd, you can see 4th Street Grade in the background. This looks like Harold was doing business here in the 30s, John Foley said.
This Shell Station was just to the west, the photo was taken earlier sometime in the ‘20s.
Harold's last location, below, was just east of the old Brewery, the building we are all most familiar with. I found a listing in a 1941 phonebook with Maier's Market at this address. Harold's grandson Dave Maier said when his grandfather sold the business to Homer Baker when he retired.
Homer ran the Market for many years, the building was eventually torn down to make room for the roundabout. The building was listed at 908 E. 2nd and later at 908 E. 3rd.
