Dallesport log deck fire continues to burn this morning as crews use front loaders to break down piles of wood debris to expose embers and extinguish fire. Pile could burn for days.

The proposed Dallesport Community Park would sit on a 5.5-acre parcel at Sixth Avenue and D Street, land originally deeded to Klickitat County in 1946 with the intention of becoming a park. That promise stalled for generations, but since 2022, local residents have been organizing to bring the site to life.

Summit Cedar Mill, located in Dallesport, experienced a significant fire yesterday that started around 3:00 p.m. The fire, initially triggered by one of the mill’s trucks catching fire, quickly spread due to high winds, igniting nearby stacks of wood.

Firefighters are battling a fast-moving fire lit by a malfunctioning semi-truck that spread the fire that eventually engulfed Summit Cedar Mill and lumberyard at 3 p.m. High winds are fanning the flames.

“I don’t even remember,” Tracy Zumwalt said of her actions after being awakened to the blaze. “I put on my slippers, grabbed my sweatpants and my purse.” She told her son Matthew “to get up, the house is on fire.”

Jonathan Von Ahn, 25, of Dallesport took some time out today, Feb. 10, to get the feel of his wheels at The Dalles Skatepark. The father of two said he had been skating since he was 11 and now his kids are showing interest and he decided to get a little practice in today.

The locks were originally set to reopen on the 21st but ten additional days of repairs became necessary due to the discovery of cracking in the downstream miter gate during annual inspections by engineers.
