Wrong Way Driver on I-84 near Mosier tagged for alleged drunk driving, resisting arrest

By Tom Peterson

The Dalles, Ore, Feb. 6, 2024 - A wrong-way driver on Interstate 84 was arrested on allegations of reckless driving, resisting arrest and drunken driving on Monday, Feb. 5 at about 9:20 p.m.

The Oregon State Police log states that Trooper Travis Paulsen found 40-year-old Dashawn Dville Clay, of Portland behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Impala parked on the right-hand shoulder of the highway near Mosier.

“The driver refused to present identification and was ultimately advised he was under arrest,” according to the report. “He refused a follow directions and resisted arrest. He later refused a breath test and a warrant was obtained. The driver then provided a breath sample per the warrant with a result of 0.15 blood-alcohol content.”

That is almost twice the legal limit of 0.07≠≠≠≠∞

Clay was lodged at NORCOR Jail in The Dalles and remained there this morning, Feb. 6.

The Trooper was assisted by Wasco County Deputies in making the arrest.

Quick reporting of the incident and observations indicating impaired driving by other drivers were key to eliminating the dangerous situation that, at worst, could have ended in a fatality.

Authorities appreciate the response by multiple citizens ensuring that the driver was intercepted.

Drivers are encouraged to keep their eyes peeled and off phones and always be looking for escape routes, - places to drive your car in the event another vehicle or object impedes your lane - a great practice of defensive driving.

We don’t say this lightly. This is the fifth wrong-way driver on I-84 in our area in the last three years.
