The Oscar Bucket List - “I’m Half-Way There.”
Congratulations are in order to the “Everything Everywhere All at Once” movie for winning Best Picture for 2022.
I’m going to add that movie to my “Haven’t Seen It Yet But I’m Working On It Because I’m Still Watching Every Other Best Picture Winner That I Haven’t Seen Yet” List (which would be a Great Title for a Best Picture Winner).
I guess you could call this my Oscar Bucket List.
I’m happy to report that progress on this decades-spanning list has been made, and by all estimates, I’m Half-Way There.
Specifically, I’ve watched all six films that won Best Picture from 1927-1933. The Early Years are a bit mixed up chronologically because the first movie to win an award for best picture, “Wings,” actually covered 1927-28, and this trend continued for a few years.
The Bulk of my Haven’t Seen List resides in the 1934-1969 Era, with the exceptions of “Gone with the Wind,” “Casablanca,” “From Here to Eternity,” “West Side Story,” and “Sound of Music.” There’s a possibility I’ve seen “Around the World in 80 Days,” but it’s Been Such a Long Time the next re-watch would be like a first-time watch.
I’m in Good Shape from the 1970s up to 2011. Notable Exceptions include “Midnight Cowboy,” “Ghandi,” and “The Last Emperor.” I distinctly remember seeing movies like “Patton,” and “The Sting,” on good-old-non-remote-controlled TV.
The last Decade has been, quite frankly, Neglected. Just last year I watched 2014’s “Birdman,” and I managed to watch the 2020 winner “Nomadland.” But everything else from “The Artist,” on (which I barely remember), is still un-checked.
Of Course, I’m blaming the Pandemic, and the Closing of Blockbuster as Root Causes for this oversight of non-viewing compliance. Plus, I wasn’t even Alive during a good portion of the Filmmaking Era.
Upon Further Research, I just noticed that my List doesn’t even have the 2021 Winner on it - apparently I need to add a movie called “Coda.” I wonder if that was in theaters? Let me update that right now…..
And please Check back with me around 2024. I should be All Caught Up By Then.

Tickets at www.Gorgeorchestra.org
About the concert
CGOA presents Sam Baker and the Gorge Sinfonietta “Chasing Light.”
Sometimes, tragedy and loss can be transmuted into art. That’s certainly true of the songs of Sam Baker. Baker has spent a career writing lyrical and intimate songs about his own challenges. But he also writes touching, surprising lyrics about everyday people, their joys and moments of suffering. Just like in 2020, when Sam Baker joined the Gorge Sinfonietta for a program of original songs, he’s partnering with the orchestra
again to present a new concert, called “Chasing Light.”
In 1986, Sam was the victim of a terrorist bombing on a passenger train in Machu Picchu. Others in his train compartment were killed, but Sam survived with catastrophic injuries, including brain damage, a cut artery, and blown-in eardrums. Over 17 reconstructive surgeries and years of rehabilitation later, Sam still suffers from tinnitus and had to relearn language and to play guitar left-handed.
The terrorist attack and its emotional and physical aftermath have found their way into Sam Baker’s songs. Haunted imagery of passengers dying and survivor guilt infuse many lyrics. More often than not, though, Baker’s songs express wonder, gratitude, love and hope. While there has been some darkness and pain in Sam Baker’s life, his songs also contain wit and humor.
Since 2004, he has released 6 albums. Baker's 2013 album, Say Grace, was listed by Rolling Stone as one of the top 10 country music albums of 2013. Baker has been featured on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross. While Baker’s songs have always contained narrative elements, he’s been experimenting with spoken word pieces with musical accompaniment. He’s even in the process of writing a play.
In 2020, Sinfonietta conductor Mark Steighner partnered with Sam Baker and wrote nearly two dozen orchestra arrangements for Sam’s songs. The program was called the “Go in Peace Symphony” after the title of the concluding song. For the upcoming March concerts, Steighner and Sam Baker will be reprising some favorites from the earlier concert, but the highlight will be a 20-minute suite of spoken word stories and songs. The new concert is called “Chasing Light.” The program also features a live performance of Baker’s “The Tattooed Woman,” which the Sinfonietta recorded during the pandemic as an online-only video.

About the Program
In this rocking musical, an uber-organized mother (Katherine) and her spontaneous teenage daughter (Ellie) magically swap bodies, and they have just one day to put things right. Masquerading as each other, they must deal with each other’s lives (including impending marriage and teenage romance) and work together to solve the mystery of how to break the spell.
By spending a day in each other's shoes, Katherine and Ellie come to appreciate one another in a way they never could have imagined. In the end, both learn the true power of love and the strength of the bond between a mother and daughter in this heartfelt and hilarious adaptation.
Director Lowry Browning taps into her professional theater experience in Houston, Texas, where she joined Actors’ Equity (a union for professional actors and stage managers). She challenges the student cast, several of whom express interest in a future career in theater and/or music, to ‘be the best that they can be’. Ms. Browning has brought in local pianist and music director Garry Estep with his professional experience in New York and Nashville to provide the music as well as coach the singers. Mimi McDonnell teaches the choreography and Kathy Vawter designs the costumes and props, while parents work with the cast in building sets.
Ms. Browning states the following about the cast and show: “The actors and crew work long hours to perform a terrific show. They are dedicated to their craft and it shows.”
