I-84 jammed up at The Dalles with trailer fire, two vehicle collision

Mike Nagle of The Dalles captured a photo of the trailer fire on Interstate 84 on Sunday, Dec. 28. A collision, separate from the fire, ensued shortly thereafter between a Tesla and a Lincoln near the same location, according to Oregon State Police.

THE DALLES, Ore., Dec. 28, 2025 — A trailer fire on Interstate 84 near The Dalles briefly disrupted traffic Sunday morning and was followed by a separate, non-injury crash involving two vehicles near the same location, according to the Oregon State Police.

Troopers responded at about 11:06 a.m. to a trailer fire on eastbound I-84 near milepost 84. Police reported a white Toyota Tundra was pulling a flatbed trailer loaded with hay when the trailer caught fire. The driver pulled to the shoulder and disconnected the pickup from the trailer.

Fire crews extinguished the fire, and the Oregon Department of Transportation moved the trailer to a wider area so it would not block traffic. ODOT crews also pushed the hay from the trailer onto the shoulder for removal while the driver made arrangements for a tow. The cause of the fire was listed as undetermined.

At about 12:14 p.m., troopers responded to a separate two-vehicle, non-injury crash near the same eastbound milepost while providing traffic control related to the earlier fire. Police reported a 2011 Lincoln MKS driven by Darla Jo Rogers, 62, of Lewiston, ID merged into the left lane and struck the rear of a 2023 Tesla.

Both vehicles were reported to be drivable, and no injuries were reported. The driver of the Lincoln was cited for following too closely, according to state police.

Traffic in the area was affected as emergency responders managed both incidents, but no additional damage or injuries were reported.

The incidents were part of a busy week for Oregon Troopers in the Mid-Columbia as multiple calls for service rang out during the holiday week.

Between Dec. 23 and Dec. 28, troopers investigated multiple crashes on I-84 and U.S. Highway 197, including several involving suspected impaired drivers. At least four DUII arrests were made during the period, including rollover crashes in Wasco, Sherman and Gilliam counties. One crash on Christmas Eve near milepost 80 westbound on I-84 damaged concrete barriers and temporarily disrupted traffic while emergency repairs were made.

Troopers also responded to a high-risk traffic incident Dec. 23 involving a reported reckless driver on I-84 in Hood River County. The driver allegedly fled on foot after a crash, was reported to be armed, resisted arrest and attempted to assault officers before being taken into custody. The vehicle involved was later reported stolen.

Christmas Day included a warrant arrest at Memaloose Overlook and an attempted compliance check on a registered sex offender in Shaniko, which was referred to the Wasco County District Attorney’s Office after contact could not be made.

OSP reported no fatalities during the reporting period, though multiple crashes resulted in vehicle damage, arrests and temporary traffic impacts as troopers worked through increased holiday travel and enforcement activity across the region.
