Professional Zaniac Family Show

FAMILY FRIENDLY ENTERTAINMENT AT THE DALLES CIVIC AUDITORIUM SATURDAY, FEB. 22 AT 2 p.m.

The Dalles Civic Auditorium invites you to bring the whole family for an afternoon of fun!

When was the last time you laughed as hard as your kids?

With captivating amounts of energy, Alex Zerbe moves like a rubber band from one end of the stage to the other. Beatboxing, juggling, dancing, singing, music, and magic are just a few things that made Piers Morgan of America’s Got Talent call Alex “The total package.” This week the two-time Guinness World Record holder performs his 60-minute show at The Dalles Civic on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m.

“Professional Zaniac”

The “Professional Zaniac,” whoʼs been cracking jokes onstage for almost 15 years, zigzags between physical stunts and non-stop comedy. During the show vegetables are sliced in half by flying playing cards, flaming torches and bowling balls are juggled with ease and every audience volunteer leaves the stage in triumph.

A self-described “human cartoon,” his show isnʼt only for the kids in the family. “I try to make my show like the movie Shrek, super entertaining for the kids but there’s a whole other level of comedy for teens and adults,” says Zerbe.

Formerly of the award-winning duo Brothers from Different Mothers, Zerbe is a Hacky Sack World Champion, was voted The Pacific Northwest’s Funniest Prop Comic and is currently ranked Seattle’s 3rd Best Air Guitarist. Heʼs performed everywhere from cruise ships and comedy clubs to prime-time television in three countries, including “Americaʼs Got Talent!” and “Last Comic Standing.”

Grab seats for the whole family by visiting www.thedallescivic.com or by calling 541-298-8533 for ticket information.

Hillstomp

Bucket 'N' Slide Brand Rock 'N' Roll Band

Tickets: https://www.tickettomato.com/event/9144

Portland, Oregon junkbox duo Hillstomp, is infamous for digging through the dumps and forgotten backwoods of American music, recycling traditional elements into a refreshing and distinctive brand of do-it-yourself hill country blues stomp. North Mississippi trance blues, a bit of Appalachia, and a dash of punkability come clanging and tumbling from assorted buckets, cans and BBQ lids all drenched in rambunctious slide guitar. Somehow it works. Despite their homemade instruments and novel approach, Hillstomp is no novelty act. Hillstomp's memorable live performances tap into a magic that cannot be rehearsed, converting outlaws and traditionalists alike from skeptics into preachers.

The Mother Hips w/ Ashleigh Flynn & The Riveters **Ticketed Show**

Saturday, Feb 8, 6-9 p.m. Doors at 5:30pm.

Tickets are $25 in advance (click here,) or $35 at the door.

About the band

Mother Hips

"Based in Northern California, the Mother Hips headed to New Mexico, spending time at Ghost Ranch before settling in at Jono Manson’s Kitchen Sink studio in Sante Fe for sessions in late 2021. Self-produced, When We Disappear features nine new tracks co-written by co-founders Tim Bluhm and Greg Loiacono — a collection of lit-psych rock songs Inspired by psychology and literature — as well as a raw, garagey cover of Buffy St. Marie’s 1964 addiction song “Codine.”

“Greg [Loiacono, co-founder) sent me a rough demo of this song and I thought it was promising,” says Hips co-founder Tim Bluhm of “When We Disappear.” “What he was singing was place-holder gibberish, or sounds mixed with some actual lyrics, including what would become the title. I went through it and matched words to his sounds and then tweaked the words to tell a kind of impressionistic history of our adventures together. In this way, I believe both Greg’s and my own subconscious worlds revealed themselves. The music is simple and loose, helping with the devil-may-care attitude of the singing.”

Hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as “one of the Bay Area’s most beloved live outfits,” The Mother Hips’ headline and festival performances have become the stuff of legend, finding them sharing stages with everyone from Johnny Cash and Wilco to Lucinda Williams and The Black Crowes. Rolling Stone called the band “divinely inspired,” while Pitchfork praised their “rootsy mix of 70’s rock and power pop,” and The New Yorker lauded their ability to “sing it sweet and play it dirty.”"

This special performance promises to transform The Ruins into a sophisticated jazz venue, where the CGOA Jazz Collective will perform timeless classics from the greatest names in jazz and big band history. The evening's repertoire features an impressive selection of dance-worthy arrangements, including Stan Kenton's tender rendition of "My Funny Valentine," the infectious rhythm of Benny Goodman's "Bei Mir Bist Du Schön," and the passionate Latin flair of Arturo Sandoval's "Mambo Caliente."

"We're excited to bring these legendary pieces to life and create a memorable Valentine's Day experience," says Michael Paul, Director of the CGOA Jazz Collective.” From the sultry sounds of 'New York, New York' to the modern jazz fusion of Herbie Hancock's 'Cantaloupe Island,' we're offering a musical journey that spans the greatest eras of jazz."

In addition to the tuneful, danceable big band jazz, the event will feature some extra touches to help make the evening special. Guests can snap a photo at the selfie station, and local favorite, Boda’s Kitchen, is providing a delicious array of sweet and savory chocolate desserts.

About the concerts

From the profound romanticism of Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet, to Dvorak’s lyrical 8th Symphony to Prokofiev’s quirky and playful music for the movies, the Gorge Sinfonietta’s “Slavic Fantasy” concert has something for every music lover. Focused on composers from 19th century Russia and eastern Europe, the concert is heavy on melody, beauty and audience appeal.

Slavic Fantasy concert

Tchaikovsky’s Fantasy Overture on Romeo and Juliet was drafted when the composer was only 29, but the final version appeared ten years later. Highlighting some of the incidents and characters in Shakespeare’s drama, Tchaikovsky’s portrait contains what’s probably the single most recognizable love theme in all of classical music. Conductor Mark Steighner said “You could call it ‘radical Romanticism.’ That theme is over-the-top emotional, but we forget how striking it was at the time.”

Antonin Dvorak is best known for his New World Symphony, but that work’s immediate predecessor is even more tuneful and uplifting. “Dvorak’s 8th Symphony is by turns Romantic, dance-like, simple like a folk song and as exciting as a film score from Hollywood,” Steighner said. “It goes through many moods, but it’s always beautiful and easy to enjoy.”

The final selection on the Slavic Fantasy program is a suite by 20th century composer Sergei Prokofiev. “We don’t often think of composers like Prokofiev writing movie music, but many of them did.” His Lt. Kije Suite is a selection of music written for a 1934 film, a comic satire about Czarist Russia, with a lot of slapstick comedy and absurdity. Like the film, the music is playful and almost never serious. “I think my favorite section is the final movement,” Steighner said, “when Kije is dying and his life flashes before his eyes, represented by all the different themes sort of colliding in his head.”

The Slavic Fantasy concert is one of three programs presented by the Gorge Sinfonietta this season. The final concert, called “Vacation Time: Postcards from a Musical Journey” will be in June.

CHICKEN $#!T GAMBLERS

Mysterious and uncool, the Chicken $#!t Gamblers  reject conformity and curb appeal in favor of ludicrousness and frivolity. Armed only with stringed instruments, internal metronomes and a thesaurus, the unhinged and raunchy gang of miscreants spread, weird, pseudo-traditional, originally crafted bluegrass tunes, with a dash of old-timey gospel, vintage Shakedown Street vibes, country sass and deep, $#!t-yer-pants intergalactic improvisation. No genre is safe from their reign of audacity. Biologically grown, woodshed cultivated, scientifically inspired, emotionally attached, filthy and kind bluegrass inspired stuffing for your soundholes.

Our goal is to raise $10,000. Please share the link to donate or buy a ticket for this special evening!

Margo Cilker’s sophomore album, Valley of Heart’s Delight, refers to a place she can't return: California’s Santa Clara Valley, as it was known before the orchards were paved over and became more famous for Silicon than apricots. Margo is the fifth generation of Cilker’s born there, and in this 11-song collection, family and nature intertwine as guiding motifs, at once precious and endangered, beautiful and exhausting. The trees here are family trees, or they’re apricot trees, but suburban sprawl isn’t looking good for either. Cilker moved from California to the Pacific Northwest in her mid-twenties and wrote much of “Valley of Heart's Delight,” while living in Enterprise, Oregon, a small town near the Snake River and powered by the river’s massive, publicly-funded hydroelectric dams. The dams (part of the same system Woody Guthrie was hired to write about) provide clean electricity to much of the western US but make it extraordinarily difficult for anadromous fish (such as Steelhead Trout) to return from the ocean and spawn in their native streams. Valley Of Heart’s Delight feeds off of this tension - how we live in and off of nature, how we live within and without family, and why we return to the places we were born.

Kacy & Clayton

Saturday, Feb. 22, Kacy & Clayton / Jeffrey Silverstein, A blend of British folk rock, American country, slightly faded psychedelia, $17 Advance // $20 Day Of Show, 6 p.m. Doors / 7 p.m. Show, All Ages

KACY & CLAYTON

A familial bond and their rolling ranchland home are at the heart of Kacy & Clayton’s music—a timeless amalgamation of British folk rock, classic American country, cross-cultural traditional songs and slightly faded psychedelia. Second cousins born and raised in rural Saskatchewan, Kacy Anderson and Clayton Linthicum were musically educated and inspired at a young age by Kacy’s paternal grandfather and grew up playing countless hours of music together at family and community gatherings large and small.

Buoyed by Kacy’s otherworldly voice and Clayton’s virtuosic guitar playing, and with a musical wisdom that belies their ages, the forward-looking traditionalists have released a string of thrilling albums beginning with 2013’s “The Day Is Past & Gone,” including two produced by Jeff Tweedy and a collaboration with New Zealand’s Marlon Williams. Touring extensively throughout North America and Europe, the pair have shared stages with the likes of Wilco, Colter Wall, The Sadies, Ray Lamontagne and The Decemberists.

Confident, focused and ever-surprising, Kacy & Clayton continue to forge a musical path on their own terms and time, showing the way for a new generation of like-minded travelers. A life spent in music, with family at their side.

 JEFFREY SILVERSTEIN

"Cosmic country with a gentle sweetness, reminiscent of Beachwood Sparks and Silver Jews at their twangiest." - NPR Music

Jeffrey Silverstein’s new EP Roseway is named after the quiet, tree-lined neighborhood in Northeast Portland where the guitarist and songwriter lives. To him, these songs feel like home. It’s New Age for the everyman: more cosmic than country and more accessible than esoteric. This is what cosmic country sounds like in 2024.
