Montana storyteller Kicks off week of music at Bargeway Pub tonight, July 20

This Week in Gorge Entertainment

By Jim Drake

“I looked up and saw a boarded-up, fenced-off and somewhat decrepit storefront. Abandoned.”

“It was like that scene from Planet of the Apes…..”

You know what scene I’m talking about, right? We have to go back to the original 1968 Planet of the Apes film where Charlton Heston is on horseback, riding on a desolate beach. He’s tired because he’s been traveling all day, and he’s in a bewildered state because the planet he’s on is familiar but far from normal because the social structure of the inhabitants has been turned upside down. And at the end of this journey, he encounters a landmark object, the Statue of Liberty, that proves his whereabouts, but the grandeur of the monument is in ruins - it has been eroded by eons of time and most likely by purposeful destruction. He breaks down on the beach, sobbing and questioning his existence in the universe.

Yeah, that’s how I felt when I got to my destination on Sunday, July 10.

For years, possibly for decades, I’ve made periodic pilgrimages to a record store on Sandy Blvd. in Portland called Everyday Music. It was like the Statue of Liberty of Record Stores, in many ways. There were thousands of records, CDs, box sets, tapes and movies from every genre that exists. There were bins of 50-cent records that waited patiently for someone to flip through them and take one or a dozen home. There was, in essence, a melting pot of Record Freedom. It didn’t matter if the record was black, white, scratched, or in mint condition.

So, on Sunday, July 10, 2022, after being cooped up in The Gorge for over two years of Pandemic restrictions, I decided to break out and utilize the CAT Transit Gorge Go-Pass system (A Fabulous Deal, by the way) and travel to my destination. I rode CAT buses, Max-Lines and Cross Town buses, and hiked in on foot. I got a close-up view of the neighborhoods that looked a lot different from the sidewalks than they do from a car. I was proud of myself for finally taking the time to get to the record store by using Public Transportation. I knew that I couldn’t carry “a lot” of records back with me, but it was all about The Journey, getting one or two things and enjoying the sights.

The Hike in wasn’t too bad, the store was a lot closer than I thought it was from the drop-off point. I knew the building was “just up the next block…” and then I looked up and saw it.

I looked up and saw a boarded-up, fenced-off, and somewhat decrepit storefront. Abandoned. The main sign was so tattered that someone unfamiliar with the initials EM would probably not guess what they stood for. It was a surreal moment. It was like I was in a movie.

Fortunately, my sad record story has a somewhat glimmer-of-hope ending. You see, the franchise of Everyday Music in its heyday had three locations, and fortunately, one still exists on Burnside and 14th. It was a bit of a shock to see that location had downsized, too. But at least it still existed.

After some record browsing, I mentioned to the folks at the counter that I was really sorry to see the Sandy location had closed. They said “Yeah, we are too. But all the inventory is in a warehouse and we’re still unpacking a lot of boxes for this location. I think they had a 75% Off Sale right before they lost the lease.”

That’s When I Cried.
