Sherman County 4-H Day Camp Wraps Up Two Days of Outdoor Education and Excitement

Sherman County Ore., June 26, 2024 — The Sherman County 4-H Day Camp held June 12 and June 13 at Camp Morrow lakeside facility in Wamic resulted in many happy campers! Thirty campers, nine teen counselors, and eleven adult staff and instructors gave the youth an active, educational, and fun outdoor experience outdoors on Pine Hollow Reservoir.
Youth just finishing grades 4th-6th enjoyed a wide variety of activities including from-scratch snacks and meals each day, being a part of a team, tie dying t-shirts, flagpole and campfire singing, leathercraft, camp crafts, field game competition including team skills and tug o war, ga-ga pit and nine-square games, a dance party, smores, archery, swimming and boating on the waterfront, and water plus bubble play on the grass.
This natural resource-based camp was funded in part by the Sherman County 4-H Association, Sherman County Soil & Water Conservation District, Sherman County Prevention, Sherman County Education Foundation, OSU Sherman County Extension, private donations, and camper fees.
The two-day camp started as an adventure, as the bus had a flat tire going down Shearer’s Grade from Sherman County to Tygh Valley. Campers and counselors waited on the side of the road for another bus to arrive, which meant we missed our morning classes. We planned outdoor education on insects and their habitats, qualities in healthy streams, and natural hiking/observation. The group could participate in the second day of classes on outdoor science and archery. Instructors included Deanna Christiansen of Sherman County Prevention, Marylou Martin and Scott Susi of local county Soil & Water Conservation districts, Laurie Wilhite from Washington State, and Todd Williver of OSU state shooting sports program.
Adult staff serving were Bridget Whitaker as cook, Jeremy Lanthorn as photographer/bus driver, Cathy Musick as counselor director, and Cindy Brown of the Sherman County 4-H office as camp director.
