Firefighters battling the Grasshopper Fire are shifting from direct attack to a broader containment strategy, constructing backup fire lines while strengthening defenses around Pine Hollow and Sportsmans Park as the wildfire remains more than 21,000 acres and 0% contained.

Wasco County commissioner candidate John Grant IV faces a DUII charge, six counts of recklessly endangering another person and one count of reckless driving following a July 21 arrest by Oregon State Police. Grant said he intends to comment publicly after his first court appearance.

A 67-year-old Portland man was arrested after Oregon State Police say he allegedly brandished a handgun at another vehicle on Interstate 84 near Hood River. Troopers located the suspect's vehicle and recovered a handgun matching a witness's description.

Adventist Health Columbia Gorge has finished reopening clinics in the Water’s Edge building, located at 551 NE Lone Pine Blvd in The Dalles, Oregon. The most recent reopenings include Rehabilitation Services, Cardiology, and Orthopedics. Columbia Gorge ENT, Internal Medicine, and the Sleep Clinic already reopened in the space in June.

Crews took advantage of a break in fire activity brought on by cool, wet weather to continue work on contingency lines across the area south of the fire. Fire activity is expected to increase in the next few days as hot and dry conditions return to the area. Forest visitors are reminded to stay out of closure areas to allow crews to safely prepare protective barriers to the surrounding forest and local communities.

For nearly 25 years, Jan Pearo has been on a journey to support her community, making her the longest-running employee at Washington Gorge Action Programs (WAGAP).  In January 2000, Pearo began helping people in Skamania and Klickitat counties. She had recently moved to Stevenson, Washington, from Portland, Oregon.

Yesterday, all crews ended their shifts and were demobilized. Some resources went home to rest while many were reassigned to different fires. All roads are open and there are no evacuation warnings. The fire is 100% contained as of Tuesday, July 30, 2024, at 6:00 PM and turned back over to the local jurisdictions.
