Firefighters pulled out of Estacada- fire too dangerous to fight
City officials were just advised by the County Emergency Operations Center that the fire has become too difficult to control and therefore too dangerous to fight right now. They have pulled all firefighters off the fire-lines and out of Estacada.
Hitting His Stride
The Dalles’ Terry Turner likely buys a fair amount of shoes. The 67-year-old could never sit still. And he is proving it more than ever now. He took a nice little run on Thursday morning, Sept. 3, 2020 along Riverfront Trail. Turner is putting in 15 miles every other day, he said. Appeal of TD subdivision continues tonight, Monday, Aug. 31.
The Dalles City Council will continue taking testimony this evening, Aug. 30, 2020, at 5:30 p.m. on an 80-unit high density subdivision that is being planned for East The Dalles. The hearing is a continuation of an appeal by community members who believe the subdivision will create safety issues because surrounding infrastructure is substandard.
$8 million in Dufur School Improvements mostly complete
Dufur School is nearing completion on upgrades on school buildings, the football field, parking and sidewalks. An $8-million bond approved by 68 percent of voters in 2018 made it possible. Check out the photos and progress here.
Columbia Cinema to open with Unhinged
Columbia Cinema in The Dalles is going to show its first movie in five months on Friday, Aug. 21, according to theater owner Bruce Humphrey. Unhinged starring Rusell Crowe will hit the screen at 3:30 p.m., he said, thanks to a smaller film company, Solstice Studios, which put the film out to test the waters.

Fire gives little time for family in fiery exit
Joel Hart immediately knew it was strange - the smell of smoke in August on the family homestead three miles south of Mosier. It was a Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2020 and the tiny-home builder said the smell got his back up. “I was thinking, ‘man, who is burning this time of year. They can’t be burning?’”
Mosier Creek Fire update 8-17-20, afternoon
Jane Burke and Thor Horgenstad with the American Red Cross are assisting evacuees from the Mosier Creek Fire at the Shilo Inn in east The Dalles. There are still five residents awaiting to return to their homes. Evacuation levels were downgraded, but some roads still remain closed. The 985-acre fire is 65 percent contained, according to the Wasco County Sheriff’s Office.
Museum opens on limited basis
Original Wasco County Courthouse is opening on a limited basis for the remainder of tourist season. The 1859 building at 410 West Second Place, The Dalles, welcomes visitors from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. each Saturday through September.
Firefighters encircle Fir Mountain Fire - Update, Thursday, August 6, 2020
Firefighters continue to make good progress on the Fir Mountain Fire. The fire remains 313 acres and is now 50% contained. By the end of yesterday’s day shift, the fire was lined around it’s perimeter by dozer line, handline and roads.

The city of The Dalles Clay Bouy and Dan Roberts flush out a fire hydrant at the corner of Kelly and 11th streets this morning. The maintenance flushes out sediment that could hamper fire fighting efforts. It’s also not such a bad job on a hot day. Temperatures are expected to hit 90 degrees Fahrenheit today.

Mark Angel: White water icon navigates his last rapid
Mark Angel, 76, of Redmond, is a white water salvage man and Pacific Northwest icon in search and rescue circles, known for his ability to salvage boats in the worst of currents during the past five decades. A lineman by trade, he has taken troubleshooting to the next level when it comes to white water, utilizing lineman tools to recover boats and people silenced by rushing water.
