Cantwell led a high-speed chase after fleeing detention during a traffic stop near Shaniko in 2021. After one of Cantwell’s tires blew out, Sergeant Matt Tuia pulled his patrol vehicle in behind Cantwell’s vehicle along the highway. Cantwell got out of his vehicle and fired multiple rounds at Tuia, striking the driver’s side of the windshield and the hood of Sergeant Tuia’s vehicle. One of the rounds barely missed striking Tuia’s left side.
While the possibility of foul play was a significant concern, authorities say they have found no evidence or probable cause to suspect criminal activity linked to Walker's death. "Though foul play cannot be ruled out completely, there is no evidence or probable cause to believe that a crime was committed," Sheriff Songer added, marking an end to the lengthy investigation.

A semi-truck appears to have sideswiped an Oregon State Police cruiser in a seven-car pile-up on Interstate 84 at about 5:43 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30. The crash occurred at milepost 71.5 in the eastbound lane, according to The Dalles Police Log.
