With severe weather hitting the region, the Mid-Columbia Community Action Council and its partners are ensuring our most vulnerable community members can access shelters, emergency lodging, and street outreach resources.

The Lower White Salmon Coalition, formed in 2016, is releasing its Vision Plan for the approximately five hundred acres of land owned by PacifiCorp along the lower White Salmon River representing the former project lands for the Condit Hydroelectric Project.

“A lot of cities are finding that they are overrun with STRs, and they have to establish limits because they haven’t planned accordingly, and we did not want to be in that position,” Krista Loney said. This ordinance will limit the number of STRs/vacation rentals allowed in the city to 32 units or 10 percent of the existing housing stock, whichever is less.

This year’s season of giving campaign, Two for GivingTuesday, will kick off at Washington Gorge Action Programs (WAGAP) beginning Tuesday, November 28, 2023.  “We are inviting community members to stop by Stevenson, Bingen, and Goldendale Housing offices to say hello and pick up two free WAGAP shopping bags,” said Jennifer Pauletto, associate director.

Mid-Columbia Community Action Council (MCCAC) is pleased to announce that we are now scheduling appointments for all household types for the December 1, 2023 opening date of our Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). A second round of contract losses forces Klickitat County into budget crunch as dollars from Landfill dwindle. When asked about the reasons for the contract losses, Steve Gilmore, media representative for Republic Landfill Services, attributed the losses to a competitive market. “It's going to get exceedingly more difficult to pass a budget in the coming years,” Commissioner Jake Anderson said. ”The landfill has been our savior and saving grace for the last 30 years…

Oregon and Washington drivers face some of the nation's most perilous road conditions, with new research pinpointing Washington ranks third in the nation for fatal crashes during bad weather, and has the highest rate of accidents involving 'other' adverse conditions. Oregon has the sixth-highest rate of weather-related driving fatalities in the country.

The call for donors is in high gear to meet the demand for the Tree of Joy holiday gift project in Klickitat and Skamania counties. The goal is to help families in need by providing new essential items, such as winter coats, hats, gloves, clothing, and shoes, with other gifts and toys to brighten a child’s holiday season.

With costs in the millions of dollars, city officials will be looking for grants to purchase and rehabilitate properties that will provide essential community services such as child care, a youth center and multi-purpose rooms that would provide space for community gatherings.

Songer stated that he believes arresting someone for killing a wolf when it is attacking or killing livestock to be “a violation of the individual’s Constitutional rights.”

“So it shifts, and variations change annually, but I will say historically, White Salmon falls pretty low statewide,” White Salmon Mayor Marla Keethler said about the city’s tax rate. “In the county, we are the lowest in property taxes.”

A 52-year-old Goldendale man was killed during a house fire at 1500 S. Columbus Avenue on Saturday, Oct. 28, according to a press release from the Goldendale Police Department.

Our Klickitat Prevention Coalition members are celebrating that their youth prevention work will continue to be funded by the federal Drug-Free Communities (DFC) grant for another five years. Flock license plate cameras are being met with mixed emotions and budgetary concerns in communities throughout Klickitat County as leaders worry about the burden of the $3,000 annual cost per camera and privacy issues.

Skamania and Klickitat County seniors can apply to receive assistance to pay their energy bills through local events held in an ongoing partnership with Washington Gorge Action Programs (WAGAP), local PUDs, and the Skamania and Klickitat County Senior Services. 

 “We have a duty to protect the citizens and visitors of Klickitat County; therefore, using advanced technology such as the Flock Cameras will assist deputies in our mission to protect our residents and visitors to Klickitat County,” Undersheriff Carmen Knopes said. Not all see it that way. “These systems are ripe for abuse and a great tool for authoritarians,” one citizen commented.
