The Dalles Wasco County Library has announced their event line up of July events.

It wasn’t easy. It took Chase Sam two cycles of applications, several years of effort, and multiple interviews with state senators and congressmen, but he has now realized his long-cherished dream. Chase said his experience with the Wasco County 4-H & TDMS underwater robotics (ROV) program and high school football helped prepare him for the Academy.

A fire along I-84 at milepost 97 6 miles east of The Dalles, OR was reported at 7:19 a.m. on June 16, 2023.

Hood River, OR— After 22 years (Hood River) and 5 years (Wasco) of individual county efforts to improve the literacy of underserved children, First Book Hood River County and First Book Wasco County are combining their literacy efforts and adding Klickitat and Skamania Counties to become “Books for Kids Columbia Gorge”.

The Dalles, OR— On June 14, 2023, Mid-Columbia Medical Center and Adventist Health gathered together to officially celebrate the new relationship that advances rural healthcare across The Dalles and Columbia River Gorge. It was revealed that the Mid-Columbia Medical Center will now be known as Adventist Health Columbia Gorge.

The City of The Dalles Beautification Committee has announced a new Tree Grants program, aimed at enhancing the natural beauty of the community and promoting environmental sustainability. The program aims to provide grants to residents within the City Limits of The Dalles to beautify and improve their properties with trees.

Mid-Columbia Community Action Council (MCCAC) is making significant progress on $1.6 million in grant and weatherization funded renovations to The Oregon Motor Motel thanks to the hard work of staff, volunteers, and local contractors. All of whom are rallied around completing the renovation of the 54-room motel which is expected to provide at least 50 transitional housing and shelter units with coordinated supportive services integrated on site in collaboration with community partners.

How do you stop a fire? Don’t have it in the first place. Wasco and Hood River county fire districts along with the Oregon Department of Forestry have banned burning on June 11 in hopes that people turn to chipping or composting rather than matches to deal with outdoor debris.

Retired lawyers and volunteers have joined forces with Portland Community College C.L.E.A.R. Clinic to assist individuals in the Gorge seeking expungement.

Annette Beyers and Mike Richardson talk about plans for improving Sorosis Park and the fundraising that is left to do this morning, June 8. Beyers had maps and brochures about the current fundraising that will go towards landscaping, the construction of an ADA-accessible gazebo/pavilion, and improved walking trails.

Dufur School welcomed the incoming class of Freshman on Wednesday, June 1, and also recognized seniors with Scholarship Awards of $135,000. Superintendent, Jack Henderson, asked the seniors if they realized how special these circumstances were at Dufur School, and all of the graduates nodded enthusiastically.

Here Come the Riverhawks - TDHS Softball team drills as usual on Thursdays as coaches work to keep this tight-knit team loose and ready to play in what looks to be a great championship game against Henly on Saturday, June 3 in Eugene. The Team is equally good on the field as they are at knocking home runs at a record pace.

Opening on Thursday, June 8th, 2023 the Small Works Exhibit at The Dalles Art Center is a window into the talent of local and regional artists. Twenty-nine pieces of art were selected from a list of over sixty submissions.

Van Tilburg has been the Health Officer for Hood River County Health Department for five years. “I love the challenge, the enthusiasm and the impact of public health,” he said. He now serves as health officer for both NCPHD and Hood River County.
