Eugene Smoke Refugees make best of bad situation in TD
Pete Meyers of Eugene came to The Dalles to try and escape the smoke and see his twin brother, Mark. He did alright on the brother. The smoke, no dice. But that did not deter the family reunion, which brought out a competitive game of Cornhole on Monday, Sept. 14.
Wild Hops
A wild Hop plant caught growing alongside Mill Creek. Hops are typically used in beer making, these little nodes are used primarily as a bittering, flavoring, and stability agent. Most of the floral and citrus flavors found in beer are due to hops. Beer making isn’t the only use for these little green puff balls, when steeped as a tea, hops can aid in digestion, due to their anti-inflammatory effects. The oils from hops also make a great agent in soaps, and candles due to their pleasant aromas they give off!
TD Schools closed on Monday, Sept, 14, due to hazardous air quality
North Wasco County SD will be closed on Monday, Sept 14th, 2020. Our first priority is the health and safety of our students and staff. Due to the hazardous air quality conditions, all district buildings will be closed and staff should stay home. Meals will not be delivered, and curbside pickup will not be available on Monday.
Major Fires Pose Cyclical Threat; Researcher Calls for Sustainable Practices
Wildfires are a part of nature; they play a key role in shaping ecosystems by serving as an agent of renewal and change. But the fires we are currently seeing burning in Oregon shouldn’t be reaching their current size and severity, according to a wildfire management student researcher Sima Safavi-Bayat.
Community Cleanup cancelled
Community Cleanup scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12, has been cancelled due to the smoke and hazardous air quality. The event, organized by Columbia Gorge Motors and co-hosted with The Beautification Committee, will push forward with a new event next month. Mark your calendar for Saturday, Oct. 10th. Meet at Thompson Park on 2nd Street next to the public swimming pool at the Northern Wasco County Aquatic Center.
Smoke expected through weekend; 40 percent chance of showers on Monday night
A westerly flow of wind is developing which will transport smoke from the wildfires along and west of the Cascades back over eastern Oregon and Washington through at least the weekend. Air Quality Advisories and alerts are in effect.

The first day of school looks a little different this year
Despite the many difficulties that have already faced teachers due to the COVID-19 pandemic this year, Erin Peter’s says her teaching team is doing their best to make the best of it for their students.
“Even though this year looks completely different, I love getting to ‘see’ my students get excited about learning on Zoom.”
Firefighters pulled out of Estacada- fire too dangerous to fight
City officials were just advised by the County Emergency Operations Center that the fire has become too difficult to control and therefore too dangerous to fight right now. They have pulled all firefighters off the fire-lines and out of Estacada.
Making Tracks
Justify, a German Shepherd mix, leads the pack here, while Janet Dewitt rides her Warlinder horse, Remington, on Crawford Oaks trail just east of Dallesport off State Route 14 at Columbia Hills State Park. She and Cynder McLoud ride the trail once a week. Dewitt said they could see a lot of smoke looking north into Oregon.
Wasco Sheriff asks for extreme caution in midst of fires
With firefighters being overwhelmed throughout the state and heavy winds and low humidity expected to continue, Wasco County Sheriff Lane Magill asked local residents to use extreme caution. We cannot afford any more fires, he said.

Volunteers Needed for Community Cleanup
Columbia Gorge Motors and The Dalles beautification Committee have teamed up in efforts of organizing cleanup events within the community of The Dalles. Volunteers will have their first opportunity to join in the effort this Saturday at Thompson Park, at 10 a.m.

Where's That Smoke Coming From? Wildfires, Smoke in the Gorge.
It’s likely to be a hazy day. Smoke from Californian and Washington wildfires will be rolling over western Oregon and Washington Friday, and possibly into Saturday. And areas local to the White River Creek Fire will continue to be impacted.
Hitting His Stride
The Dalles’ Terry Turner likely buys a fair amount of shoes. The 67-year-old could never sit still. And he is proving it more than ever now. He took a nice little run on Thursday morning, Sept. 3, 2020 along Riverfront Trail. Turner is putting in 15 miles every other day, he said. Before lacing up the shoes, Turner was the Hattenhaur Distrubting sales development guru.
